Enforcing the law: Alleged gang member killed in encounter, eight others arrested

A 35-year-old man killed in an act of target-killing in Bijli Nagar, Orangi Town.

KARACHI: A suspected local commander of a Lyari gang was killed in an alleged encounter with law enforcers in Lyari. Meanwhile, over half-a-dozen suspects, including target killers and extortionists, were arrested in separate raids by the police and Rangers on Wednesday.

The encounter occurred in Kalakot, Lyari, when the police and Rangers conducted a joint raid at the gangsters’ hideout. On reaching the site, the law enforcers came under heavy fire from the alleged gang members. In the retaliatory fire by the police, one of the suspects was injured. He was rushed to Civil Hospital, Karachi, but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Police officials claimed to have seized weapons from his possession. His companions, however, managed to escape under the cover of firing. Lyari SP Sheeraz Nazeer told The Express Tribune that the deceased was identified as Rasool Buksh alias Ramee. He added that the alleged gangster was involved in a number of cases of target killings and kidnappings for ransom.

In a separate incident, another alleged gangster, Ali Raza, was arrested in an injured condition after an encounter with the police in Daryabad, Lyari, within the limits of Kalri police station. Police officials said that the arrested gangster was involved in a number of cases of crime. Law enforcers are looking for his absconding companions.

SIU arrest

Separately, Special Investigation Unit claim to have apprehended a notorious target killer and extortionist, Pervez Iqbal alias Teeli, during a raid in Pak Colony. His arrest was disclosed at a press conference by the SIU chief, SP Farooq Awan. The official said that the accused was affiliated with a political party and was involved in around 20 cases of target killings, including those of his own party’s workers as well as police personnel. A Kalashnikov and two hand grenades were also seized from his possession.

Three more suspects, including an alleged target killer, were arrested during a joint operation by police and Rangers in Mawach Goth. The arrested suspects were identified as Abdul Majeed, Akhtar and Jamil. Police officials said that Akhtar was involved in at least five cases of target killings. The suspects were shifted to an undisclosed location for questioning.

Similarly, three suspects allegedly involved in several cases of extortion were arrested during a targeted raid in MPR Colony in Orangi Town. The suspects were identified as Hidayatullah, Saeedur Rehman and Naik Muhammad. Police officials also claim to have seized weapons from their possession.

Target killing

Meanwhile, 35-year-old Bashir Muhammad, son of Mian Muhammad was shot dead in an act of target killing in Bijli Nagar, Orangi Town, within the limits of Mominabad police station. Police officials said that the victim was shot dead by at least two armed motorcyclists. The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. Police officials said that the deceased hailed from Swat and was murdered over personal enmity.
