LAHORE:

The one-judge judicial tribunal tasked to investigate the circumstances that had led to the June 17 Model Town tragedy on Saturday summoned former Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah and Punjab chief minister’s former principal secretary Dr Tauqir Shah along with other top officials.

The tribunal, comprising Justice Ali Baqar Najfi, also asked the home secretary to appear in person along with a report regarding the possibility of constitution of a joint investigation team (JIT) on the incident that had left 12 people dead.

Punjab Baitul Mal’s secretary was also directed to appear in person to apprise the tribunal about the possibility of payment of compensation to the affected people. The tribunal also sought personal appearance of the Punjab health secretary with autopsy reports of the victims.

Jutice Najfi has also taken notice of non-submission of an investigation progress report by the Punjab police chief and non-appearance of Lahore district coordination officer (DCO).

“A daily progress report regarding the investigation of the incident was required by this tribunal from the IGP Punjab,” the tribunal noted. “He is reminded that the said report is to be submitted on a daily basis without fail, otherwise, an adverse inference may be drawn,” it added.

The tribunal will resume its proceedings on Monday [June 23] at 2:00pm.

I do not belong to any political party and am permanently settled outside Pakistan. My comments here are entirely independent.

It is a great shame that at a time when the country is focussed on fighting terror some political leaders are trying not only to steal the show but cause maximum damage to the current administration. One can not understand why Mr Qadri had to visit Pakistan right around this time when, considering his lack of direction, the country could come to a virtual halt.

I had great respect for Imran khan but sadly he has proven disappointing. He is intensely vocal and critical of others but does not have any solution for the rather messy problems the country is facing currently. The remaining members of the Gang likewise do not have much to offer and lack courage to wait and see, allowing the democratically elected party to work on the projects that are underway. They together only want to create a mayhem to justify another take over by the Army.

I sometimes wonder if we deserved an independent country?
