LAHORE:

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah of the Lahore High Court on Thursday directed registrar of the court to provide facilities for disabled persons at the principal seat as well as its benches in Bahawalpur, Multan and Rawalpindi.

Justice Shah asked the registrar to get reports of missing facilities from all the district and sessions judges of the Punjab.

The judge said these facilities should be immediately provided at the LHC and the district judiciary. He said court buildings should set a trend for other public buildings to follow.

Earlier, Registrar Mahboob Qadir Shah told the court that ramps for disabled persons had been constructed in the LHC but there was no arrangement for toilets and parking facilities.

The architecture director told the court that ramps and toilets were available in 13 under-construction public buildings while parking areas near the buildings would also facilitate disabled persons. He said soon these facilities would be available at all public buildings.

The judge asked him to submit a list of public buildings lacking such facilities within a fortnight.

A representative of the Lahore Transport Company was directed to make a plan ensuring facilities for disabled people in public transport.

Lahore Development Authority was also directed to submit a report in this regard by the next hearing.

Justice Shah was hearing a petition filed by Zain Zahid Ali.

The petitioner had sought provision of facilities including ramps, toilets and parking lots for special persons in public buildings.

The judge will resume hearing on September 11.
