Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Saturday blamed a typing error for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s victory in last year’s elections, alleging that the public mandate had changed hands with the single stroke of a pen.
“Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) got 6.8 million votes in 2008 but in 2013 its vote bank swelled to 14.5 million and I think that is a real typing error,” Imran told a large public rally in Sialkot. He was alluding to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s claim that ‘typing errors’ were responsible for the change in the number of votes in a constituency of Sargodha from where Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif won.
“People voted for one party in Pakistan but the mandate went to another,” he said, adding that the May 11, 2013 polls were not elections but a big fraud, which could be exposed just by opening four [ballot] boxes.
He warned the government that his party would continue to protest for justice as he requested the chief justice of Pakistan to feel the pulse of people and give justice to them.
“The CJ should take notice of our demands [to unveil] the rigging during May 2013 general elections and provide justice to the masses who have sacrificed a lot for the independence of judiciary,”he told the gathering.
He said the judiciary was answerable to Almighty Allah more than to the common man as it had been mandated to do justice.
He said he himself had spent eight days in jail for an independent judiciary. “However, it is a horrible fact that the biggest rigging, in which public mandate was snatched, took place under an independent judiciary,” he said
Imran quoted examples of various constituencies, where ballot papers were recounted and maintained that the National Database Registration Authority chief was trying to change the results by switching off CCTV cameras at the time of the opening of ballot boxes.
He said his party leader, Jahangir Tareen, spent Rs20 million on a vote recount in his constituency whereas another PTI candidate, Hamid Zaman, had to spend Rs5.7 million for the same purpose. “How is it possible for an ordinary man to afford such big amounts for justice?” he asked
To substantiate his claim, Imran asked to play the audio tape in which a DPO was allegedly asking people to vote for the PML-N during by-elections in Hafizabad. The PTI won in Hafizabad but now the Punjab government had adopted a vindictive attitude and registered 37 cases against PTI workers, he added.
The PTI chief also lambasted the new federal budget and declared it a pro-rich and tax evaders’ budget. “There is nothing in it for the common people and the poor. It is pro-bandits budget as the government is not sincere to facilitate the oppressed,” he added.
Imran also criticised the role of Jang/Geo Group chief executive Mir Shakilur Rehman, adding that he had sympathies with the journalists working for Geo/Jang Goup.
He presented a 2013 document in which the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) chairman had told the PM that Mir Shakil was allegedly threatening him over the expected arrest of one of his relatives.
Imran alleged that the PML-N had a soft corner for Mir Shakil in spite of the fact that he had blackmailed Nawaz Sharif in 1998. “Mir Shakilur Rehman had also threatened State Bank’s governor for some ulterior motives,” he added.
Imran said the penalty imposed by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Geo was not sufficient considering its crime. He urged the government to make Pemra a strong entity on the pattern of the United Kingdom.
The PTI chief announced that the next public gathering to protest against alleged rigging would be held in Bahawalpur on June 22. Senior leaders, including Javed Hashmi, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Ejaz Chaudhry and Jahangir Tareen also addressed the gathering.

DEMOCRACY IS THE BI-PRODUCT OF VOTE - IF THERE IS NO VOTE THEN NO DEMOCRACY !
How many signs you are required to analysis what is right and what is wrong. Have a bird eye view to WORSHIPERS of OLD BELIEVES like QURASH of Makkah:
Elections Rigged - PTI Demanded recounting which is within law. PML-N avoided and create all possible hurdles to stop recounting, i.e stay orders from courts, pressurizing election tribunals and judges, removed NADRA Chairman, election time announced Rs.5 per vote fee for recounting in FIRST TIME (in the History of our country). Provide maximum facilitation to big players help for rigging, Najam Sethi (PCB Chairman), Iftikhar Chaudhry given 06 servants and his son Govt. residence against the law. GEO Tv award rights of sports events and Yellow Journalist like Iftikhar Ahmad and his son, Rauf Tahir appointments on higher posts.I can go on and on but there would be no use of talking to "SUMMUM, BUKMUN, UMYUN"
Remember there is always FEAR in the mind and heart of WRONG DOERS .
What else you require to GUESS !
I am sorry to hear from educated people that the current system is democracy. This is all corruption and a bloodly revolution is the only solution!
I am really surprised when someone says that done is done..let nawaz rule for 5 years...Same kind of behaviour was adopted when america attacked iraq...some people started saying ohh.now done is done please pray for america to succeed...same people said the same thing when america invaded Afghanistan. What is the problem with the people ? If u can not stop something wrong at first hand..then we should accept it as fate and keep quite....No and not at all.. if u did not stop it now..things will be worsened....Nip the evil in the bud..or if u can not then keep on trying...so that demage should be less.In that respect i am absolutely sure that imran is doing right thing. If we do not fix the things than trains.....jungla busses etc. Will move on the bodies of poor country fellows.
No party has ever accepted defeat in Pakistan. Same is done by PTI. No difference. No change. This is a fact that PTI lost the elections because this party does not have roots in public. I am 100% sure that it will get defeat again in next elections as well as that will be even more bitter.
Where is that new KPK that was to be built in 90 days? Now a year is gone but there is no new KPK. Imran can only blame and abuse others. On the other hand, PTIs performance is the poorest as compared to other provinces. Shahbaz Sharif should be appointed CM of KPK, I am sure things will start becoming better.
ET has place this report soo low. It should be a headline on the ET website. Wonder whats going on with ET now? mQm news as headline? give me a break.
PML(n) took the government when there was nothing good in Pakistan. Economy was about to default at that time. Credit goes to PML(n) that due to their tireless effort, economy has started giving positive signals. - Stock Exchange has shown tremendous improvement during last one year. - Foreign investment has also started coming in Pakistan. - Percentage of inflation has come to the single digit. - Many projects for power generation have been started which will give production after few years. - No mega scandal of corruption has come during last one year. - Much improvement is seen in the affairs of Railway, PIA and Steel Mill. - Dollar has come down and rupee has been strengthened. All it shows that government is performing well despite countless hurdles. Baseless criticism of PTI. They should focus on KPK.
PTI is doing all drama due to one fear. They think that If PML-N rules for complete 5 years, then PTI will have no chance in the next elections. Imran should respect the mandate of PML-N.
@funny: Imran Khan presented audio proof and exposed your dearest N League's fraudulent practices in the elections! It was the EC that admitted typing errors was the reason behind so many bogus votes! Open your ears and eyes!
Khan Sahb you are absolutely right. Yours Sialkot speech was unusually comprehensive. Current bureaucratic system is extremely inept and inefficient and DPO's election campaign is also one proof that demands its complete overhauling.
a typing error? is that what you eventually came up with Mr. Khan? Long live PMLN
The Sialkot jalsa was historic! So happy to see a massive turn-out of PTI supporters! Kudos to every single person at the jalsa for not letting the sweltering heat take a toll on their junoon! Each jalsa is turning out to be better than the previous one with some really eye-opening revelations and awesome speeches by PTI leaders!
Typing error or election fraud. So what is new about this. Isn't this how elections are to be conducted in Pakistan, and have been for the past 50+ years. Why do anything to change the culture of corruption so deeply embedded in the Pak society.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry on Pti's situation after their loss in general elections.Rigging elections is the norm through out the world and more often we come across it in third world countries but lets just talk about Pakistan. ANP was not allowed by Taliban to carry out their election campaigns openly and the party had to suffer a loss from it but still they came out to accept their loss openly like any mature political party would do.Being in power in a weaker province and going all out against the federal government will result in getting peanuts from the federal kitty for province. PTI fighting the federal government at this time and stage will actually leads to weaken democracy and pave way for undemocratic forces to strengthen.
imran khan refereed to sargodha constituency in which in one polling station registered voters were 1500 & nawaz got 8000 votes. ecp declared it "typing error" and it proves that how many more typing errors were made in 2013 elections.
Sialkot spoke today-does PMLN have any doubts?
Khan Sahb you are absolutely right. Yours Sialkot speech was unusually comprehensive. I'm once again returned to you. I am extremely against current bureaucratic system and DPO's election campaign is also one proof that demands its complete overhauling.
Imran Khan is a great philanthropist but an immature politician. Yes, there was rigging in last election, though lot less than earlier elections, but still this is not the way to protest. He should sit in the parliament and try to change the system. If he doesn't believe in the system then what is is fighting for?
There is an old saying what goes around will come around. He is taking to the nation in a direction that if he wins the next election then someone else will play the script that he been playing and Mr. Khan will not be able to handle it and will not complete his term either. Is that the tradition he is trying to instill?
Mr. Khan must push for electoral reforms but using parliament. It will be better if he be elected as chairman of parliamentary committee which oversees elections and could give its recommendation to ECP. Also, he should work with ECP to add teeth to laws to punish those who do rigging.
I'm still waiting for that audio tape where Najam Sethi was accused of rigging elections ~ please khan sahib play that audio tape in your next jalsa...!!!! People would love to hear that if you were correct about him
