Lawlessness has been around since the 1970s to the stage where now the sole law that seems to be followed and favoured by the state and its mobs of bigoted illiterates is the one that is increasingly being misused these days. The ruling classes and the so-called educated uppers rest in fear and silence while brainwashed individuals and mobs, with impunity, wreak revenge, greed and pent-up violence (probably also their form of recreation) and commit murder using religion as a cover. Can one lay all blame at Ziaul Haq’s feet, absolving those that followed and forgetting that Zulfikar Bhutto was the one who paved the way for Zia and his self-styled interpretation of faith? No, we cannot. No leader, military or civil, has had the guts, or perhaps the nous to recognise wrong, and tackle the misuse of religion by retrogressive forces.
Pervez Musharraf, now charged with a multitude of crime, treasonous and others, should be charged with not doing what he could have done when he held supreme power. Had he been what he is not, a perfect dictator in the mould of his hero Ataturk, genuinely believing in ‘Pakistan first’, he could have in a few fell swoops taken on the militant mindset and its backers — after all Nawaz Sharif in a previous coming managed Sundays over Fridays in one television appearance (granted, with his own industrial and financial empires in mind). Musharraf chose the retention of power path, pandering to the religious right and politicians fearful of the holy brethren.
Now we have back Sharif, with his evergreen teammates, legacies of Zia and his army who and which (under orders) distorted religion. So we cannot possibly expect any succour from this lot for the blight inflicted last century – they can’t help it, old habits and tutoring at the feet of the master are ingrained (always remember the shelved 15th amendment).
Democracy normally dictates the separation of church or whatever from the state for good reason as this country must at one point, if it can sort itself out into survival mode, realise. Democracy also normally dictates that elections are a cleansing process, weeding out the individual failures, even disaster-makers, and bringing in fresh minds and faces. But this ‘land of the pureed’ – as one witty columnist lately came up with as a headline – digs itself deeper and deeper into a morass of destruction, resurrecting the dead, worshipping sacrifice and martyrdom. This third coming of a man who was supposed to have been converted, learnt a lesson, and with a reconditioned mind has turned out to be a flop. He has brought in with him men who have been tried and failed. The hopes of the foolish who had them are dashed to the ground.
And what lies in opposition, one party which did nothing but complete a five-year term and is now trying to make the right noises, the once-shining newcomer with his dubious team and allies which threaten to drag the republic into more of a mess than it already is. What are the choices that lie ahead? Not even worth a mention.
Where is the knight in shining armour with a sharp lance?

@Motiwala: @ Insaaf is only joking,…And @Sadiq is only trying to sound mean. They are both in jest. Only the Indian trolls don’t want to see it.
Everyone except Brigadier Sahib can see it is a jest, Obviously you cannot use polio as a weapon duh!!
You take us far too seriously
@Brig. Sadiq Mohammad (retd): They are only being sarcastic. It's in jest. You need to chill out @ Insaaf is only joking,...And @Sadiq is only trying to sound mean. They are both in jest. Only the Indian trolls don't want to see it.
@Brig. Sadiq Mohammad (retd): Brig, we can understand the source of your frustration, but please calm down. The karmic cycle of reward and punishment applies to individuals and countries without exception. None of us can buy our way out of misdeed, we have to pay through pain and suffering. However, no matter how bad the past, all of us have an opportunity to redeem ourselves through good deeds. So please do not lose hope but join hands with like minded forward looking people to build a new, moderate, liberal and progressive Pakistan. Every challenge can be overcome if we sincerely believe we can be the agent of change. If we allow the sub conscious mind to guide us, we will be not only be on the right path, but also liberated from fear. Good Luck !
Never before have I been so ashamed to be a Pakistani. Today our youth sees Polio as a weapon to glorify Islam instead of trying to abolish this scourge of mankind. Today they want to spread Polio to the rest of the world in the name of Islam - have we not disgraced Islam enough by forced conversions, killing of minorities (and we shout for Muslim minorities elsewhere!) killing of our own Shia brothers. I wept when I read this article. This is what we have come down to. Our neighbour India sending rockets to Mars and we sending Polio to the rest of the world. Let us throw those atom bombs on ourselves, we will do mankind a favour.
@Sexton Blake:
After Fukushima experience by the japanese, Germany has decided to close down all nuclear powered energy plants in its territory, as soon as feasible.

@Sadiq: Any idea what the response would be from those countries over such Pakistani antics? Let's see, the green passport would be good NOWHERE, foreign aid would cease, and the world powers would probably decide to return the favor by "testing" their biological weapons in Pakistan!
I do not think Pakistan needs to worry too much. The whole of the Western world is going broke, whilst they continuously think up reasons for going to war and killing millions of people once they succeed. In the meantime they are furiously building nuclear power stations, which they do not know how to control. We currently have Fukushima in Japan, the world's greatest environmental, and uncontrolled disaster, constantly emitting poisonous radio-active isotopes, destroying or polluting the pacific fish life, and creating health problems which make polio seem insignificant. We also have Chernobyl nuclear power station quietly emitting away, and slowly spreading its nuclear pollution around the world. The US is routinely spreading trouble around the globe by encouraging and sponsoring organizations such as Al-Qaeda and Blackwater or whatever its name is now, because it constantly changes. The bottom line is that along with official military personnel they have created a disaster in the bombed out hulks of what used to be Iraq, Syria and Libya and these countries children are constantly being born with deformities due to the use of nuclear contaminated weaponry. We could also use a full article to discuss the pollution, and damage to children's health in Vietnam and Cambodia as a result of Western wars. Yes, Pakistan has serious problems and needs to work very hard at solving them. However, as serious as they are, in comparison to the disasters constantly being produced by the rest of the world, I would suggest that Pakistan's problems are penny-ante stuff.
Madam Jillani,
The author has the wrong side of the coin, it is not the Democracy but Fascism in its original form which dictates the separaation of church or whatever is the legitamacy and backbone of human dignity, morality and ethics. Madam, notwithstnding the main corpes of your article it was Adolf Hitler, the most popularly elected chancellor of third Reich, who entered into a concord with the powerful Vatican, separatig the authority of the church from the Government administration and the Chuch operating without the iterfearance of the Government apparatus.. The first secular Government was established in Europe, authorising him for his adventure. This concord for your information is still valid, imbedded in the German constitution, however, are the values of the Ibrahimic religions.

@Sadiq: Fortunately for the world, most people are vaccinated against polio, soon like the rest of the jehadis, even polio will be attacking mostly Pakistanis
@Insaaf: Let the Indians laugh. Reality is that our nuclear weapons cannot do what biological warfare can do. Insha Allah, one vial of our Polio virus mixed in a curry in UK or on a sandwich in USA can bring these so called superpowers to their knees in a week and make them weep. They have no idea how powerful we have become with Polio. Insha Allah, we will spread polio to India, Europe and beyond.
There are too many things that need fixing and too little time to do it. The world is moving at a rapid pace and those not nimble enough can get left behind. Every country must reinvent itself frequently to align themselves with the growth engines, while simultaneously beefing up competitiveness. Dogma and Ideology are lodestones around the neck that none can afford to carry.
@Insaaf: That is good ! Laughed hard.
Madam, you are too pessimistic. We are one of the worlds most powerful army and nuclear power. Today we have developed the capability of using Polio as a biological weapon against countries beyond our nuclear strike distance. The world is afraid of us and we can demand as much aid as we want.
Excellent article by the author. Cannot expect anything less. It took this long for the country to turn into a reviled morass. An international pariah. Most dangerous, most corrupt, most this, most that,..A poster child for everything gone bad and haywire. There is no Gandhi,..no Jinnah in sight. There is no unity, no loyalty, no one will to stand up. Just the Sharifs, the the Zardari, the Baby Bhutto, Kadim i Aala, mullahs, fighting fighting over the near death carcass.
Good read , sad a country made from almost the same grain as India has gone so far on a path so wrong.
