RAWALPINDI:

The District Health Department will launch a week-long special drive to create awareness among women about the healthcare of mothers and children.

Health Executive District Officer (EDO) Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal told APP on Sunday that Lady Health Workers (LHWs) would visit door-to-door under the campaign being launched from May 12-17 and educate women about their health and preventive measures, especially during pregnancy, delivery and for infants’ health.

Sharing details of the arrangements finalised at a meeting held here at the District Coordination Office (DCO), he said LHWs have been directed to create awareness among mothers about importance of breastfeeding newborns for at least the first six months.

Besides, he said, children from ages two to five years would be given deworming medicines, while polio, measles, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis-B, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and tuberculosis vaccinations would be administered to children below two years of age.

District Programme Coordinator Dr Javaid Iqbal said free-of-cost folic acid tablets would also be given to pregnant women to overcome food deficiency, along with tetanus injections.
