KARACHI:

A judicial magistrate on Saturday allowed police more time to submit a charge-sheet against an American who was arrested at Jinnah International Airport for carrying ammunition and three knives aboard an Islamabad-bound flight.

Malir Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Ali Memon directed Sub-Inspector Shahadat Ali Khan, who is investigating the case, to file the charge-sheet against Joel Cox by May 19. Cox, who has been described as an FBI agent by international wire agencies, is expected to be back in the court that day.

Presenting Cox in court on Saturday, Khan had requested more time for submitting the charge-sheet, saying that the investigation was still under way.

Earlier, on May 8, Malir district and sessions judge Muhammad Yamin granted bail to Cox against a surety bond worth Rs1,000,000 ($10,000) and ordered police officials to release him forthwith if his custody was not required in any other case.

But police were asked to present the suspect on May 10 and the investigating officer was directed to submit a charge-sheet against him.

Cox was detained by Airport Security Force (ASF) after 15 9mm rounds, a magazine and other gadgets were recovered from his possession on May 5. His passport is still being held by the police, although no court has issued an order to stop him from traveling abroad.
