KARACHI:

KRL downed Bhutan’s Ugyen Academy 3-0 in the 2014 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President’s Cup in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Friday.

Yasir Afridi scored the opening goal in the first minute of the match and Muhammad Dawood doubled the lead in the 14th minute. Seasoned striker Muhammad Qasim sealed the win with his goal in the first minute of the extra-time in the second half.

Earlier, the Pakistan club had recorded a goalless draw against Bangladesh’s Sheikh Russell KC in the opening match.

KRL will play their last Group A match with hosts Sri Lanka Air Force, who registered a win against Ugyen in their opening match on May 7.

Despite losing star players Kaleemullah and Muhammad Aadil to FC Dordoi earlier this year, captain Kamran Khan says KRL has the ability to recover and bounce back as favourites.

He added that maintaining last year’s form will be challenging for them in the absence of injured Samar Ishaq, Saddam Hussain and Bilawalur Rehaman, who are playing with the national squad in Palestine.

The top two teams from the group will progress into the next round of the tournament.
