KARACHI:

Asjad Iqbal ended compatriot Hamza Akbar’s run in the 30th Asian Snooker Championship, beating him 4-3 in their last-32 match in Al Fujairah, UAE.

Akbar was looking for a chance to make his own mark at the event, but was undone by his countryman by the closest margin in the seven-setter.

Asjad set the tone for victory by winning the first three frames to pile up a 3-0 lead, but then Akbar put up some brisk resistance, levelling the score at 3-3.

However, Asjad held his nerves in the decider to win with a scoreline of 64-10, 82-31, 70-45, 19-72, 05-67, 07-75 and 74-38.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Akbar will stay in the UAE or return to Pakistan, as he will be representing Pakistan in the World U21 Championship in the same country.

When the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) was contacted about the issue, an official said that Akbar’s situation is unclear since he will have to be back in the UAE in a week’s time again.

Camp for World U21 begins

The camp for the World U21 Championship, which will be played from May 10-18, will begin from Thursday in Karachi under the supervision of PBSA official Naved Kapadia, at the Khurram Agha Snooker Club.

Asian U21 runner-up Mohammad Majid Ali, Haris Nadeem and Mohammad Faheem will participate in the eight-day camp while Akbar’s availability is doubtful.
