HARIPUR:

The chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, Senator Talha Mehmood, on Saturday said that a targeted operation against irreconcilable militants was necessary.

“There are over 60 Taliban groups in the country and those having negative mindset could force the government to launch a targeted operation,” he told a press conference.

He spoke in detail about the Taliban with positive and negative mindsets and the approach the government needed to adopt in dealing with the two.

Senator Mehmood said that in the fast-emerging changes on the regional horizon, the role of Pakistan has become very crucial requiring the government to take steps more pragmatically. “Role of Saudi Arabia is also important in the prevailing situation,” he added.

To a question regarding former president Pervez Musharraf, Senator Talha said everyone wanted him to be punished but no one was ready to take the burden on his shoulder.

He said the Chinese government has accepted to make Haripur District a sister of a Chinese city. This linkage with a Chinese city will make Haripur one of the few model districts of the country.

Senator Talha said he supported the cause of a separate Hazara province.
