Counter terrorism: IG says police need effective intelligence system

Seven-kilometre traffic corridor to be built as experiment to help traffic flow.

PESHAWAR: What the police force needs right now is an effective intelligence system to fight militancy, said Inspector General Police Nasir Khan Durrani at the first meeting of the police working group on Thursday.

He added they planned to set up a school for investigation in Peshawar and another for intelligence in Abbottabad where they plan to teach how to collect intelligence.

The IGP stressed that the Counter Terrorism Department should also be set up as soon as possible.

The meeting was presided over by former IGP Fayyaz Toru and held at the Central Police Office.

Durrani informed participants about steps that had been taken by the police, including the traffic management system, forensic laboratory, community policing and police order 2002.

He said that as an experiment to help improve the traffic flow in the walled city, a seven-kilometre traffic corridor will be built. If successful, the model will be expanded upon.

While talking about crime data collected in the last five years, he said it had been computerised and added regional training centres would be established at regional headquarters.

Toru assured police officers steps would be taken by the group and the government to improve the situation of police stations. He added that the working group should meet every week.
