Three members of al Qaeda arrested in Karachi: Police

The accused have been involved in attacks on the Bohri community in the city and on police officials.

“We have received important information from the accused regarding the activities of the al Qaeda in Karachi,” said Khattab.

KARACHI: Counter terrorism unit of the CID police claimed to have apprehended three suspects, belonging to an al Qaeda sub-organisation, “As'hab” during raids in different parts of Karachi on Friday. 

Inspector CID Raja Omer Khattab told the media CID office on Friday said that accused suspects Alam alias Asad, Arman Naveed alias Shoaib Khan and Hassaan Shuja alias Amir had been arrested from different areas of the city.

Khattab said that they recovered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), weapons and explosives during these raids.

“We have received important information from the accused regarding the activities of the al Qaeda in Karachi,” Khattab revealed, adding that the accused were carrying out surreptitious activities under different names including distribution of their materials on campuses.

“The accused have revealed in the initial investigations that al Qaeda is running small cells in the city and every cell has its own duty and are provided funds.”

The officer added said that some of these cells are responsible for recruiting students of various universities with a focus on those majoring in information technology. These students mostly reside in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shah Faisal Colony and Gulberg areas.

The students are not told that they are working for the al Qaeda network and they are handed over tasks according to their capabilities. He added that some of the students upload videos and information from all over the world on to al Qaeda websites.  These students don’t use phones but communicate through a number of email addresses.

Khatab said that As'hab is also operating a militant wing in the city with at least six to seven trained members.

The accused have also been involved in attacks on the Bohri community in the city and on police officials, he claimed.
