After holding a cricket match for peace last year, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has launched the under-17 ‘Imran Khan Cricket Talent Hunt Programme’ at Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium to discover talented sportsmen in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and the tribal areas.
A performing troupe of the Frontier Constabulary enthralled spectators with the traditional Khattak dance while cricket star Shahid Afridi’s presence at the venue served as a benchmark for aspiring professional cricketers.
The programme, inaugurated by Imran Khan on Saturday, will incorporate former cricketers to act as selectors and coaches to form a team each from the seven divisions of the province.
The talent hunt will involve four-day selection trials in each division wherein boys from settled areas as well as the Frontier Regions and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) will participate.
On the first day of trials in Peshawar, which will end on January 28, a total 2,003 players from Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, FR Peshawar and Khyber Agency participated. Chief Selector Maazullah will select the division-level team for Peshawar with the help of his assistant, Anwer Zeb.
Seven teams will be selected in total during the trials, after which a training camp will be organised to train them for a tournament. The tournament will consist of 22 matches, after which a single team of 16 players will be formed.
“I live in Karachi but my heart is in K-P and Fata. The tribal areas have more talent than any other part of the country. I met the governor to discuss promotion of sports in the region and he informed me that he has approved a sports academy for the tribal areas,” said Afridi while talking to the young players. He lauded PTI’s talent hunt initiative and said talented individuals cannot be discovered without opportunities.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan said he will provide talented players from K-P and Fata to the national team and will help bring the cricket world cup to Pakistan. “The selection process will be transparent and players will not be selected on anyone’s recommendations,” promised Khan.
Khan said the provincial government will set up sports complexes at tehsil levels across the province this year and will do the same next year in every union council. He said he was selected at the age of 16 in the under-19 cricket team for Lahore and knows the value of such programmes for aspiring cricketers.
The PTI chief said talent, technique and temperament are the three things that make a champion, and promised to meet the selected team of 16 next year.
“Any player who comes to the ground thinking about losing will always lose. The idea is to become a champion before playing the match,” said Khan.
Hafiz Muhammad Abbas, an aspiring professional cricketer from Peshawar, said the programme is the need of the hour as the province does not lack talent but is short of avenues for opportunity. Another player, Hasan Hayat, said this drive will bring the best players to the forefront through transparent means.

When I meet a European, the first thing I say is, “I’d much rather watch football than football. Football is game of Advanced countries. Mr Imran Khan u must know football is like life - it requires perserverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority. We need more football bring change a positive change in society , I am afraid cricket getting famous in Pakistan for some other reasons.
@Dajjal: You obviously have OCD judging by your name and comments. If that's not serious work then I don't know what is.
Quit playing games with my heart. Khan sb and Afridi.
Sports I love them. Pakistan have quite populated and we dont have any activity in Olympics and other big events of world. We should really it is serious and have invested in it like India is doing.
@Fawad: Man dont use false accuations just be positive and stop supporting PPP and MQM in Sindh problem will solve
Imran khan has problem of being biased for selecting players from Fata or KP. First of all why all people of Fata, KP come to Karachi to make their living. They dig hole in Karachi and making it dirtier every day. They want to earn from Karachi and support their KP, Fata ppl.
Why they don't just go back to their origin if they are so loyal. Here you see double standards of Afridi and Imran. Imran k is one man show. I don't support him.
Talent is all over Pakistan. So better say select players from Khi, Lhr and KP.
due to karachi Afridi is playing cricket in national team,doing his business in karachi....and people of karachi gave so much love to Afridi .in the end....I LIVE in KARACHI but MY HEART is with KP and FATA...this is food for thought for the supporter of PTI in Karachi
want more football in Pakistan.
@Yasir: crickcet is just popular bcz it involve gammbling. it is not in blood it is in money
@Juma khan: very well said i agree with u to completely. we need fast sports those are popular in devloped world. cricket is just galmour and popular in pakistan among ;lazy people
Please pay head to more on football and Hockey. A cricket can be beneficial for few in whole day.
@asfandyar: I Do agree with you, Majority of young Pakistani love to play Hockey.I love extreme sports, I like motorcross and rollerblading and hockey. I am sure whom about u have played hockey would cant go LAzy sports like cricket. And having Football and cricket ground will doubly benefit one that a lot majority can play in one day. and other Hockey and football can save lot of time as no need to just 30 guys to occupy the field whole day. While with Hockey 240 guys can play in whole day.. .. Hockey is the original extreme sport.
I love IMRAN KHAN, and totally support him, I wish I was born in KP.
Thumbs up for the photo!
@Sarmad Hassan: I generally don't waste my time with pointless activities until all my serious work is taken care of to begin with... but thanks for the suggestion...
@Dajjal:
very well said ! how about you just throw the tv out of your house, stop reading newspapers and cut off your internet connection just because you have serious profession to take care of and all the problems at your work place is resolved !
@Yasir.
The majority of people play Football in balochistan and the northern areas of KP. i am from swat and people are mad about football here.
@Dajjal: Now that peace has been restored in Pakistan, target killing finished in Karachi, load shedding is just a memory, economy sky high ........ Noe let's go to muree in heli to take a look at the new palace if nawaz Sharif
@Yasir: Yeah there are millions of Pakistanis who love soccer. I am one of them. Every year in the months of October to December, we have a provincial level tournment at our town Latamber Karak, where different clubs from Peshawar, Bannua, Lakki Marwat, Panyala, Hangu, Kohat, Dara Adem Khail, Miransha, D.I Khan, Tank, Pizo etc and sometimes from Pubjab as well, participate in this tournament. There is lot of talnet in those players but they need govt support for facilities and training.
Now that peace has been restored in KP and all pre election campaign promises have been fulfilled by PTI and there is nothing more to do... its time to concentrate on serious issues like cricket....
Dont just bring back cricket world cup to Pakistan, also bring back Cricket to Pakistan
A true Pakistani
Millions of Pakistanis like hokey or soccer? Really?? where are those millions of people? i do agree that people like hockey and soccer in Pakistan, but can it beat the cricket fever which is in our blood?
