KARACHI: Wajahat Hussain Naqvi, a candidate of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for the local bodies election and chairperson of the Matami Anjuman-e-Makhdooma-e-Konain, was laid to rest on Wednesday.

Naqvi was travelling in his Suzuki Swift car along with a friend, a police security guard and a driver when he was killed in a low-intensity explosion. “At least two men on a motorcycle came close to our car and fled after putting explosive material on the car’s roof,” victim’s driver, Fareed, told The Express Tribune. “Within ten seconds, a loud explosion took place.”

Naqvi died on the spot and his friend, Azeem, was wounded — both were in the backseat of the car. The driver and guard, however, remained safe in the explosion.

Azeem is still admitted in the Aga Khan Hospital but doctors said that he was not in a critical condition. According to police officials, they have yet to record the statement of the injured as they have not been allowed by the doctors to speak to him.

Naqvi’s funeral prayers were offered after Zuhr at Ancholi Society and he was later laid to rest at the New Rizvia Society graveyard. The prayers and burial were attended by the victim’s family members, relatives, a large number of shia scholars, leaders and MQM’s workers.

“The government and law enforcers should inform all of us about what kind of operation is being carried out in the city. This is a failed operation,” said Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen’s (MWM) spokesperson while talking to The Express Tribune.

Naqvi was working at a bank and then started his own import and export business. He leaves behind two sons, a daughter and a widow. “Ask the government and law enforcers about my loved one’s killing,” said Raza Naqvi, uncle of the deceased while talking to The Express Tribune.

A protest was also held at Numaish Chowrangi by multiple organisations where extra contingent of law enforcers were deputed to avoid violence.
