Why criticise democracy?

Letter October 20, 2010
With at least five distinct ethnicities, Pakistan can only be governed by a democracy.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Mahreen Khan’s article ‘The ugly truth’ (October 19). A bitter truth is that a country like Pakistan with at least five distinct ethnicities can only be governed by a democracy with enhanced powers given to provinces. In that context, it has to be said that articles like these only strengthen the belief that we should have military rule since politicians are too incompetent and corrupt.

But why is no one talking about an ‘in-house’ change? Why is the entire democratic system attacked when we talk of political parties? As for the state of our superior judiciary, it is far better than others in the past. Their actions are only to further supremacy of law and respect of the 1973 Constitution.
