LAHORE:

The Government College University (GCU) has submitted a feasibility report to the provincial government for the construction of a sub-campus at Kala Shah Kaku.

According to the report submitted on December 19, the projected cost is Rs12 billion.

“Built over 370 acres, it will be the largest sub-campus of a public university in the Punjab,” GCU Vice Chancellor Khaleequr Rehman told The Express Tribune on Wednesday.

He said several new programmes including media studies and law would be introduced at the campus.

“Biotechnology and engineering would also be taught at the campus… We also plan to start medical studies (MBBS) in the future,” he said.

“I believe social sciences are very important. I have requested the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to change the proportion of pure science and social science from 60:40 per cent to 40:60. The HEC has consented,” he added.

Rehman said the sub-campus project would take four years to complete. He said the pace of progress would depend on “how the government releases funds.”

“Currently we have 11,000 students… the university will become a large-sized university once the sub-campus at Kala Shah Kaku is established.”

“We are organising a special event on the occasion of GCU’s 150th foundation anniversary. We are hoping Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who happens to be an Old Ravian, will attend the event,” he said.

Rehman said distinguished Ravians from all walks of life would be invited.
