KARACHI: A bomb fitted onto a motorcycle exploded on Friday near the Old Sabzi Mandi area, killing two persons and injuring another 24, said Karachi Additional IG Shahid Hayat.

The apparent target of the attack was the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in-charge Shafique Tanoli, who lives near the blast site in the Pakhtun Chowk area. At the time of the attack, Tanoli was near his house. He was injured along with his driver and two gunmen.

The motorcycle hit the left side of the car while Tanoli, who has also served as SHO Mauripur, was sitting on the right side. Soon after the collision he jumped off the car.

The Bomb Disposal Squad has not filed a report on the incident. Witnesses state that a youth rammed his motorcycle into the car but jumped off from the two-wheeler just before the collision.

Police officials, confirming the reports, said that the attacker might have been injured in the incident and they were looking for him among the injured brought to the hospitals.

Tanoli has been involved in many high-profile cases in the past including the Wali Khan Babar case. He has previously escaped six attacks.
