The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is considering closure of a probe into the case of Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan regarding the alleged distribution of money by the army to politicians, sources familiar with the matter told The Express Tribune.
According to these sources, sufficient evidence could not be found during the course of the inquiry to initiate criminal proceedings against the politicians, who allegedly received donations from the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) to be spent on election campaigns during the general election of 1990.
The FIA will base its argument on the Supreme Court judgment directing the authority to initiate a transparent investigation and subsequent trial if sufficient evidence is found. On October 19, 2012, the apex court issued a 141-page verdict, ordering legal proceedings against former Army Chief Gen Baig and former head of ISI Lt Gen (retd) Asad Durrani in a case filed 16 years ago by Asghar Khan.
