The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has decided to give independent status to the Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD), currently working under Hayatabad Medical Complex.

An autonomous board will be constituted to run the affairs of IKD to convert it into a full-fledged medical institution. This was decided in a meeting held by K-P Chief Minister Pervez Khattak in Peshawar on Friday.

The relevant authorities were directed to take necessary steps to ensure the complete provision of basic facilities, including transplantation, dialysis, urology and nephrology and the requisite medical staff. Minister for Health Shaukat Yousafzai, Adviser to CM on Economic Affairs Rafaqatullah Baber, MNA Shehryar Afridi, IKD Director Professor Asif Malik, among others attended the meeting.

The CM noted that there was no proper institution in the province for kidney-related diseases. He directed them to streamline the kidney centre along modern lines so that K-P residents would not have to travel and bear unaffordable expenses for complicated treatments of such diseases. Khattak asked for all available resources to be utilised for the purpose and said deficiency of funds would not hamper the process.

He added the provincial government has increased the health budget by 18% for the current financial year as compared to last year. Khattak said this reflects the commitment of the provincial government to provide quality healthcare facilities to the people.
