ISLAMABAD:

The government has decided to make amendments to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) constitution relating to appointment of its chairman.

Asma Jegangir, the counsel for the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC), told the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that the government has decided to amend four clauses of the PCB which relate to the appointment of its head.

The IHC bench was hearing an intra-court appeal filed by the PCB, the ministry of the IPC and former chairman Zaka Ashraf over the appointment of the PCB chairman.

On October 29, the IHC suspended Najam Sethi as acting PCB chairman, but later, a two-member IHC bench set aside the suspension and issued a stay order.

Jehangir informed the court that the government was considering issuing a statutory regulatory order (SRO) to remove all glitches facing the cricket board.

She said a meeting to discuss the change was scheduled with the prime minister on December 10.

However, it could not be held due to engagements the PM had with US dignitaries on the day.

The bench observed that the government can issue the SRO, but the July 4 single bench judgment will remain and the court has to decide the matter.

Advocate Abdul Rauf, representing petitioner Major (retd) Ahmad Nadeem Saddal, who had challenged the appointment of Sethi, argued that the incumbent PCB chairman has not been appointed on merit.

He argued that Sethi is affiliated with a media house and there is conflict of interest between his two jobs. He also said Sethi was also a tax defaulter, as according to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) website, he owed them more than Rs10 million.

The bench adjourned the matter till December 16.

Najam Sethi is a tax defaulter?!

Unbelievable, seems like anyone can be anything in Pakistan. Never go by face-value. All this time following his show and his high moral arguments I really didn't expect this. I thought he would be one Pakistani in the media that we all could apparently trust...
