Activists in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), some armed with clubs, have been forcibly searching trucks in an effort to halt Nato supplies in protest over US drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal belt.
The unofficial checkpoints began on November 24 after a call to blockade Nato supplies by PTI chairman Imran Khan.
Pentagon spokesperson Mark Wright said on Tuesday that the US had "voluntarily halted" shipments of cargo leaving Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing in K-P.
Torkham is a key transit point used by the Americans and Nato to withdraw military hardware from Afghanistan, as part of a troop pullout set to wrap up by the end of 2014.
Another border crossing point for Nato convoys in Balochistan is not subject to the PTI-led protests, and convoys there are understood to be unaffected by the suspension.
PTI spokesperson Shireen Mazari hailed the Pentagon's move as a "tactical success" and said the protests would continue.
"The US decision to halt Nato supplies through Torkham doesn't affect our protest and we will continue our protest until drone strikes are stopped," she told AFP.
Imran demanded the government block Nato supplies after a US drone strike that killed the late Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) leader Hakimullah Mehsud but Islamabad has shown no appetite for such a move.
US officials said trucks have been told to wait for now in holding areas in Afghanistan, with Washington expecting the route to resume operating soon.
A US defence official said Washington believed the Islamabad government fully supported the use of the route and that it would soon restore security to the area.
Islamabad signed a deal with the US in July last year allowing Nato convoys to transit Pakistan until the end of 2015, but a spokesman for the interior ministry said they were unable to intervene.
"Maintaining law and order is a provincial subject and the provincial government is responsible for security of Nato trucks, we can't direct them in this regard," Omer Hameed Khan told AFP.
The PTI leads the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but highways come under the authority of the federal government, and some have argued there is no legal basis for the blockade.
The United States has alternative routes available to Afghanistan's north through Central Asia, though those options take longer and are more expensive.
The US and Pakistani governments recently issued a joint statement saying the road route through Pakistan was considered important to both of them, as well as to the Nato alliance.
About half of US cargo is being taken out through Pakistan, with the remainder being removed by aircraft or a combination of planes and then ships at regional ports.
Nato cargo shipments across Pakistan have been disrupted in the past due to political strains.
Islamabad shut its border to coalition trucks for more than seven months after a US helicopter accidentally killed 24 Pakistani troops, reopening it in July 2012 after Washington apologised.
As of September, the Pentagon said it had to send home 24,000 vehicles and 20,000 shipping containers of equipment after more than 12 years of war.
Drone strikes are deeply unpopular in Pakistan but US officials say they are an important tool in the fight against terror.
While Pakistani officials publicly criticise the bombing campaign, the government is believed to have tacitly backed at least some of the strikes over the years.

Well done IK and well done PTI. As I always say its time for this nation to grow a pair. Obviously faith in ourselves is in short supply.
According to the information and the sources familar with recent development American is not in favoure of total recall from land locked Aghanistan.
They are in search of a new stooge and under his leadership want to keep considerable number of forces in Afghanistan.
United state is also busy in taking safety measures because December 2014 after withdrawal there are chances of upheal against pro America governement.
The peace process already underway has totally failed because Mullan Umer's stance has no flexibility he understand American forces are aggressive forces and deserve no sympathy.
PTI is costing Pakistan millions of dollars of financial losses everyday, loosing more than 100,000 jobs from people of FATA and KPK who have to feed their families. Have they found an alternative for that ? I'm guessing not. What benefit would closing supplies be ? Is that going to stop drones ? Go ask the people from tribal areas. They want drones. They are sick and tired of Taliban and PTI using them for their political gains. Rather than stopping the real issues, PTI has become a political wing of TTP and it got clearer on the day when they supported Jamat e Islami for calling Hakimullah Masud a Shaheed. As a person from a Tribal Areas once questioned. How is it different from the Taliban who fight the U.S. by attacking Pakistanis on Pakistani land?
IK's demagoguery may win him political points, but he should be aware that Fazlullah's taliban can only gain from this showdown.
congratulations PTI &JI for leading the KP people to eat grass and go back to jungle life .Bread will be soon 70 to 100 rs a piece.
@O: You say: "How will Iran get paid??? If they start getting paid, then i assume Pakistan can resume their plan to complete the Iran-Pak pipeline. If I am not mistaken the savings from that gas pipeline are estimated at >$2Bn p.a. which is more than what Pak gets paid through the CSF payments. Plus the addition of Iran oil supplies in the international market will drive down crude prices. Which directly or indirectly impact more than 40% of the countries import bill."
You are correct on one point but wrong on another.
True that additional oil supplies from Iran will drive down oil prices.
However, on the pipeline the $2 billion per annum savings claimed by Pakistan's officials is most likely based on the difference between the contractual price of $13/mmbtu for the IP pipeline and the $18/mmbtu quoted to Pakistan by Qatar. However, if you see that when it was IPI pipeline and included India the price offered by Iran was $6.5/mmbtu. This means that Pakistan will be loosing $2.5 billion per annum by Musharraf's stupidity of forcing India out as the price of gas is now double and Pakistan also lost the transit fee it would have earned for the gas flow to India. When it was IPI pipeline, there were no US sanctions. On the IPI or IP pipeline, no government, be it military or civilian was ever interested in buying gas from Iran. It is still the same and you will see different stories coming out to put off the pipeline. The only thing Pakistan is trying these days is to get out of the damages clause in the IP pipeline contract. This damage clause starts to kick in from December 2014 and Pakistan has to pay $3 million in damages/day or pay nearly $750 million that Iran has spent for building the pipeline on its side. Interestingly, when it was IPI pipeline that included India, even most of the civilian population in Pakistan were not interested as they thought that the pipeline will benefit India only as they did not foresee the oncoming gas shortage in Pakistan.
Now wait for the US Dollar to touch PKR 200 by the middle of 2014. Iran and Pakistan signed a currency swap agreement over 2 years ago and till today Pakistan has not been able to export even one rupee worth of goods to Iran using this facility. Iran has repeatedly refused to buy wheat from Pakistan. Nor are they selling fertilizers or iron ore to Pakistan.
Now, what is PTI going to do about TTP?
u guys are brainwashed to the core..I cant make u understand anything accept some religious book quotes........
Can somebody tell the stooges governing Pakistan that when you stand for your rights in a free world the other nations respect you.Pitty they may have understood this if they were educated
@Indian Business Analyst For a moment lets forget about our dead people, Can you explain how Pakistan will make money after withdraw of NATO? Pakistanis are not making money rather these dollars are liability as they are being consumed by our elite class. The only common Pakistanis involved in this whole episode are truck drivers. They are not even being paid the deserved amount. The road infrastructure in horrified state due to this NATO supply. They are not being repaired. It is better to stay away from our affairs. You are sitting outside and cannot give us better advice.
I dont understand why all people of Pakistan don't understand that we pathans are also sons of this country why our blood has no value for federal government, people of punjab and sindh. Did u ever noticed that why kpk and balochistan is so backward becuz u people dont care about us and why would u do cuz generally u think we are the most stupid ppl in the world, take examples from the jokes made on us.u must be ashamed by saying that drones are justified and not ppl who are protesting I wish u ever have a single thought while reading this and a missile comes and kill ur son or daughter how would u react. U ppl think we are stoneage ppl who doesnt deserve to live and is good for hunting by drones or taliban dont we deserve to smile and can go out freely as u ppl go for outing anytime. ...I doubt if punjab and sindh govts and ppl special ly doesnt change the attitude towards us we might start dharna for seperate country we got redources and we ve got gutts to live without pakistan or vanished from the map of the world but wih dignity cuz this is why we live and for that we die.
@Umar: Thanks...i will try and grow up as fast as I can. Who's talking about defeating US or NATO? They are simply blocking Nato network to put some pressure on US. And first step seems to have worked. Some shipments have been suspended. No one had an issue with this strategy when we blocked NATO supplies last time....so don't understand why its an issue or doomed strategy this time around?
NATO supplies are continuing, its the withdrawal that has been put on hold pti is desperate to show anything positive from its foolish behavior.
We urge everyone to keep in mind that we are fighting a common war and share a common stance against terrorism. Our common enemies would love to see us part ways for the sake of gaining advantage. We have a shared responsibility of restoring peace in the region. Therefore, it only makes sense for us to remain unified in regards to our peace objectives in the region. Our leaders continue to meet to address our shared concerns, and we hope to overcome any issues or concerns that are preventing us from working in a healthy partnership.
Ali Khan DET, United States Central Command
It would seem that the USA cares more about the safety of Pakistani drivers than Khan. The USA will just use alternative routes - they may cost more and use non Pakistani drivers but it won't have a substantive impact on the drones, war or withdrawal. In the long run the big loser is Sharif who appears to be duplicitous and/or weak - something that is becoming the trademark of Pakistan leadership.
Imran Khan has been proved a brave political leader and on the right side of the matter. All the allegations leveled against him has been proved baseless groundless, mindless and brainless.
In the matter of fact,Obama Administration has failed regarding the alternative transit routs. They should keep in mind the option used by Pakistan after the incident of salala post in which 24 pakistani soldiers were martyred ground supply lines were closed remained closed untill unless American apology. State Depart forgot the same option can be used again. Obama administration should recognize that Drones are violation of International law,It has killed innocent people and demaged their properties.Drones are also violation of country's sovereignty. The persons, relating to the United nations, investigated the matter and found drone attacks unacceptable, they described it open aggression on an sovereign state. It has been opposed by the world people. They are still describing such attacks unhuman and illegal,it must be stopped.
@Ali: Easy there on the 'HAHAHAs' thats exact;y what im trying to say , the worlds largest army isnt gonna vanish away into thin air , itll need all the routes it can get its hands on if it wants to escape.
@Zubair Malik: That was USSR alone this time its not only the US but more than half of Europe with them. That's why I say GROW UP KIDS GROW UP.
@Farooq:
You will not do business on you dead brothers (rightfully, hoping that you do indeed doing this for the 1473 innocents) However you will talk to, actually beg to talk to terrorists who killed 40000 innocent pakistanis, and will not say a single word to punish them.
What else is the definition of cowardice? whatelse is the definition of hypocracy?
Sadly, there are people who would prefer enslavement. lack of education, third world life and lack of dignity for a few bucks from their masters in the west and then they justify this approach using any means.
This is exactly the kind of mentality the feudal politicians of PPP, PML posses and promote. They have never had a vision for improving this country at all. Instead their vision is to keep the masses uneducated and then fool them with sweet talks before elections and vanish right after winning elections.
Now, when Imran Khan does something for this country they start accusing him of all kinds of things, FORGETTING THEIR OWN HISTORY.
@indianbusinessanalyst...............we aint the only Asian country that needs US$. Despite our shambolic economy we aint got 70% of our population living below the poverty line + people eating from garbage + living on footpaths + raping for fun + dying of aids as happening in our respected neighboring territory. What we need is a tweaking of our national policy and economic strategy + dependence on our own massive natural resources which other countries in Asia can only dream about to get us out of the mess we are in. IK is the man who we feel can make it happen. Its not alone that US$ that we need its more about how we can earn and not get it as aid that matters most for us.
The eventual losers are happy and celebrating.....ahhh KPK people.
Will the drones now come to a standstill? What a wishful thinking.
@all pakis.....u are not understanding...Economy the word itself is invented by US and the west..and rest of the world just studied it......they will use whichever way they want to use weak countries and they know the level of research in islamic countries and they know that without these help no every muslim country can only roam on camels and make use of religious studies..therefore dont get emotional..think from Mind...what if tommorow US say that no pakistanis are allowed to enter US...than...even china/Indian economy is dependent on US.....I am saying factual things..think from mind..not from Islamic brains....
@roadkashezada: tit for tat mate...old saying...Pakistan shouldn't mess around for dollars F-16s!
@salman: Son grow up what do you thing bunch of fools shouting here and there can defeat US and Nato. One thing I like about US people and that is they love their country and not any single person. I wish for a day when Pakistanis will also behave in the same way. That's the change that we want and what we should look for. Take care.
It is slap on the face of PTI hoolagans. Pakistan and in particular KPK trucking industry will suffer losses and drones will continue.
All those making ridiculous assertions that Iran will suddenly allow NATO supplies through its territory and willingly get involved in this hoopla are senile, retired folks who along with their mental faculties have lost sense of world affairs. It happens at this stage and is quite common for these unemployed folks who daily tune into ET.
@Farooq: any mention of brothers and sisters and kides killed in cities of pakistan. around 40,000. i m sure none of them was flying a drone
@Umar: And since US and NATO don't want to keep a huge army in Afghanistan any longer then they have to, suspending or delaying the exit from Afghanistan is only going to add to pressure on US. Good job from PTI. At least they stuck to pre-election promises, unlike PMLN who were all for blocking routes, etc.....until they came to Power. Height of Hypocracy from PMLN!
@Pakistani National...I second that.
Indians do not poke your nose in pakistani affairs, we dont want your opinions or comments
Proud to be PTI Member. Great decision taken by the them for the peace of Pakistan.
@Indian Business Analyst: Ofcourse. Makes sense because Iran - US relations are at their peak! Anyway, in the remote instance that supplies start going through Iran, it is good from a regional perspective to bring Iran back into the mainstream with other nations. How will Iran get paid??? If they start getting paid, then i assume Pakistan can resume their plan to complete the Iran-Pak pipeline. If I am not mistaken the savings from that gas pipeline are estimated at >$2Bn p.a. which is more than what Pak gets paid through the CSF payments. Plus the addition of Iran oil supplies in the international market will drive down crude prices. Which directly or indirectly impact more than 40% of the countries import bill. The potential fall out from trade restrictions are there but then again who wants a more unstable Pakistan so the probability of that happening is low. So who is the winner?
@Umar: Hello kiddo,,,,,, take it like this when USSR invaded Afghanistan, they were kicked out leaving behind their machinery, so what if now the history repeats itself as the Russians did not get any help when returning the only help for US is Pakistan if it is blocked from here then the US will have no choice but to make another deal with Iran which will cost them financially even more,,,,, that hurts mannnnnnn
Hello PTI kids - US and Nato has suspended its movement of warfare from Afghanistan to Pakistan for their exit from Afghanistan. So what you have done "your boss Imran Khan has succeeded for the part time to keep US and Nato in Afghanistan" , so "mission accomplish by secret agent". So please grow up kids and analyse what's going on. Love you all PTIs
Not far sighted/ forward looking people these PTIians. Now see what they do to you, Pakistan will be on loosing end they might send it through Charbagh also in Iran. Its much convenient and might cost less esp as reproachment with iran has happened. Immo Bhai youre a gone case when it comes to being politically aligned. I wont waste my vote on you. You care more abt few tribals who have caused havoc on my fellow countrymen then about Pakistanis as a whole. A leader who is scared of zombies. Youll be amazed at viewpoint for drones amongst mainstream pakistanis esp educated. While Iran opens to the world but bigot leaders like him we are creating many enemies then friends. Even China isnt siding with you now even.
@Aysha M: Busy pleasing your foreign national money launderer cum terrorist who doesn't have the guts to come to Pakistan, don't forget MQM thugs have completely destroyed Karachi to fill the pockets of your leader
Awaiting comments of people calling IK "dirty politician" & "taliban khan"
Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif is busy in shoe polish of US masters
@ polpot
Read again buddy, PTI claims this a 'tactical success'. They never claimed it as 'mission accomplished'.
Have drones stopped, this T20 drama wont last long.
A tactical success indeed!!! Great job PTI workers, hats off to you!! We don't need dollars that are dipped in the blood of innocent people and children. I hope our shameless and immoral federal government understands this one day.
Imran Khan is the best. We love you so much. Sincerely with love from KP and FATA.
@Lost?: @Vinay: @Indian Business Analyst:
Indians do not poke your nose in pakistani affairs, we dont want your opinions or comments
First time ever has a politician dared to go against US. Slap on the face of PPP & PML
@Indian Business Analyst: With all due respect we have lost far more dollars than we got from this US,,,, saving lives are far more important than dollars if we are alive we can earn them instead of begging,, this is what the real purpose is here,,,,, and just make your analysis again yu will find that overseas Pakistanis are the one key to this economy currently not US,,,,, you should also consider analysing the AID is there since 1947 but had we grown or not,,,, so i consider this argument nothing but rubbish,,,,,, also now there is a point that we also challenge the reserve of dollars backing our currencies and resume to barter trades,,, that as an analyst u know is the biggest blunder in the history of mankind,
People power is being experienced! The clock is ticking, it is upto the aggressor to change course. Once the people beome aware of the power of RESISTANCE, democracy takes firm roots and the peoples independence flourishes. This has been the story of the European civilisation which is on course despite several setbacks in its history.
Rex Minor
How is this a victory? Isn't the goal to stop drone strikes? All they have done is to make truck drivers unemployed.
"PTI hails US suspension of supply trucks" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I thought PTI was for suspension of the drone strikes!
Mr khan should be declared persona no grata by l the NATO countries involved in Afghanistan and prevented from travelling to these countries . Don't they know he is guilty of supporting the terrorists?
Wait for the consequencies
where there is will there is a way
for the 1st time US is on backfoot,... Thanks to PTI, the real pakistani patriots.
Okay so who won?
Although we are business analyst unlike all pakistani strategic analyst...this is a big mistake done from pakistan..Soon u will see nato/supply going through IRAN....then pakistan will loose some dollars and this is not good for the health of pakistan at these times.....Pakistan is not in a position to even let go a single US $..........try to make US dollars..otherwise begging is always an alternative..ET..I am basing all these things on facts...do publish....
Imran Khan is the only politician who speaks the truth, did exactly what he promised the nation! Feeling proud of being a Pakistani today!
