Call it checkered, tartan or simply plaid, it’s time to fill up the closet with this winter’s hottest trend. Although tartan can be worn all year around, especially in the form of fitted cotton shirt during summer, the hip and trendy pattern has traditionally always been a winter fashion staple. The best thing about this versatile print is that it can be worn in any form — a skirt, shirt, pants or shorts. Be wise in your choices, however, because you want to make a fashion statement; not end up looking like a disaster.

If you are not quirky enough to sport a tartan print from head-to-toe, let it stand out against a solid colour or an edgy fabric, like leather. Check out Priyanka Chopra, aka Piggy Chops, as she stunningly carries off a black leather mini skirt and a champagne red tartan top. For a fun and preppy look, try on a bright tartan dress like Emma Watson, or a flared plaid skirt like Jessica Alba’s. While tartan can be worn in any colour, for this season it works best in striking shades of red and black or a deep purple, considering these are primarily winter hues. Head out to your favourite shop, get a hold of trendy tartans and go casual, smart or sexy, depending on your mood for the day.
