The curfew was later lifted in Hangu after situation returned to normalcy.
The shooting happened in the city of Kohat while activists from the Sunni organisation Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ) were demonstrating against Friday's violence in Rawalpindi which left nine people dead.
"The activists were rallying against the Rawalpindi violence when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the procession from near a mosque in the area, killing two people," district police chief Saleem Khan Marwat told AFP.
Another local police official, Tanweer Ahmad, confirmed the incident.
Marwat said the ASWJ activists retaliated by firing bullets in the air, which sparked tension in the area. Some shops were set on fire in a market near Shah Faisal gate.
Police and the army cordoned off the area and ordered markets closed. A search operation is underway.
Later in the day, the authorities announced a public holiday in Kohat on Tuesday.

@Voice: two deaths includes one police man is followed by a curfew and the ay after by a public holiday must be some kind of a joke from the childrens book.Who are the grand muftis or the high priest authorities of this tiny city which caters for the military and their families as well as the bureaucrats? The police chief and the army chief must be very busy trying to maintain order in the outpost?

Well knowing the fact that situation was very sensitive due to Rawalpindi incident, the K-P Government has failed to maintain law & order in Kohat. Is Imran Khan awake?? Or he is still in bed with the sweet dreams of TTP!!
@Midhat:
I think Jibran was saying that ASWJ are wahabis, I don't think it means that all wahabis are ASWJ.
ASWJ has brought this insult on Wahabis through their terrorism, ignorant literature and speeches. It is to the benefit of peaceful Wahabis like yourself to dissassociate yourself from them
@Jibran: Generalization at its worst! By declaring a mischief group as wahabis and giving no futher explaination, are you asserting that all Wahabies no matter how civilized, educated and peaceful they are, they should be lum sumed with this troublemaking group?
E.T Mods. The comments by this commentator are always hateful and offensive towards a particular school of thought! I am not sure how they always get published.. I belong to the Wahabi school of thought. My beliefs may be different but as long as I don't enforce my beliefs on someone and respects the differneces, my right to follow something shouldn't be challenged nor should my school of thought be insulted.
Imran Bhai, before you start criticising Punjab Government without any valid reason, let me inform you that Kohat is in K.P.
Saudis and Iranis both are making Zombies in Pakistan.....Saudis with the help of agencies to justify so-called jihad(Pakistan's interest) and counter Iranian fear of revolution that Saudi's witnessed in 1979 at oil rich "Eastern Province" called Hassa....Eastern Province is alone is 5th largest oil reserve in world and almost majority population is Shia....
Now Iran is recruiting many Shia youth from Pakistan to counter Saudi militants in Pakistan, and help to train them with Hezbullah.....The difference is Saudi funded militants are trained in Pakistan while Iranians need to go Iran...
We witness many returning passengers from Iran get killed in Balochistan, because agencies keep track on each other...
Fear of the Day..... When Saudi's and Irani's will stop throwing bones to their created zombies, will not prey each other, but also hollow all country.
Our nation needs to learn it...
Pakistan needs an AttaTurk.
Its clear now Pakistan belongs to sunnis only. This is not Jinnah's Pakistan anymore.
Sunnis and Shias have happily lived together in Pakistan for decades. But now its clear Shias are not even considered Muslims. So the solution is give us a piece of land which is 30% of the land mass of pakistan.
@asif:
Wake up Asif! those forces are INTERNAL supported by Saudi Arabia.
Yes, we should analyze it and tell them enough is enough! and punish the terrorists with full force of the nation.
@abdus samad: be careful stretching your arm across the arabian sea into a military garrison town of the colonial times perching on the edge of the autonomous tribal territory. Your country has not a positive image in the international arena because of the mistreatment of foreign workers. Be kind to the slaves and your so called shia citizens.

Jibran, thank you for that important distinction between ASWJ and Sunnis.
we need to understand that there are some external forces who do not want stability in this region. the need of the hour is to control our emotions and analyze these incidents in a prudent manner rather than blaming and accusing each other
Fire started in Punjab by Nahali of PMLN govt started taking to engulf the whole Pakistan. The actual sources of this fire goes way back in 80s when Nawaz was blue-eyed political son of Zia.
Why hasn't IK taken his CM to task for this senseless killings and failure to uphold law and order? KPK government should resign forthwith for this blatant negligence.
@abdus samad:
As I sunni, it is an insult to me that you include ASWJ as sunni. They are modern day Kharijis who must be destroyed, and save the population from their evil. They are the same people who now included sunnis along with the shias in their Kafir slogan in Rawalpindi.
As far as this incident goes I wouldn't be surprised if it is infighting of TTP and their plot to change this into bigger chaos, as that is the only thing they know....
officially ASWJ is banned...why there were allowed to hold a protest in the first place? they created the mess we are facing now...action should be taken against it leders
sikandar,
Juloos has been going on for centuries, and it has always been peaceful. There is much freedom of religion in Pakistan, and it should continue to be that way. I'm Sunni, but I support Juloos every year and distribute drinks.
@theOnlySane: and who should resign for Rawalpindi? Barack Obama? David Cameron?
Jibran, thank you for pointing out that important difference. ASWJ are not Sunnis. They are Wahabis.
Sunnis are not violent in Pakistan.
@abdus samad: they are in majority, it doesn't matter.. :P
Aah seeing the comments ....No please not another Baghdad........... on the agenda of KSA and Iran ....we will kill each other why ? ....Both are trying to become good friends with Imperialists Power .....Patience is lacking on both Sunni and Shia sides .....please behave ...if my sect tells me to kill other ppl if they don't agree ......i guess i would like to leave that sect....if someone has another view about Muawiyah because they read a different history and you read a different and yet you feel the urge to call them Qatal-e-Hussain .....
Please be human first then try to adopt some religion.........
