The question is, why we are failing while the rest of the world has succeeded in freeing themselves from this plague? There are many reasons for the puzzling and troubling state of affairs on this issue — irrational social attitudes, misuse of religion, apathy of the society and weak governance. I will spell out these reasons and suggest a way out if someone with power and authority would care.
Firstly, why is polio an enemy of all, why does it pose a major threat to the people and to the state of Pakistan itself? Polio is a virus. Like all viruses that attack humans, it spreads in many ways — open, raw sewage, human waste, air and polluted water. It is invisible because 96 per cent of the infected persons don’t show any symptoms. Not all affected persons may be the victim of the disease, but can cause poliovirus infection to their immediate family members, neighbourhood and the region where they live. When the infected persons change their residence, they carry the live virus within their bodies to other places, cities and countries.
What happens when poliovirus attacks a person? He/she may die, be crippled and may have severe breathing problems leading to more health issues. Imagine a healthy child getting crippled because poliovirus attacked his or her motor neurons, which it does. Think of parents and families with crippled children and how taxing the burden of life might become for them. And this is a tragedy that can easily and without any costs be avoided.
At least, we can and must raise our voice, do whatever we can do to make people aware, push governments to work harder and expose the ignorance and hypocrisy of those who prevent polio eradication to the extent of using violence against polio vaccination teams and the security personnel sent out to protect them. What a shame!
There are many bigoted social attitudes but none are so damaging as resistance against polio eradication and family planning — which envisions a small, affordable size of family with healthy children, with all their basic needs taken care of. They must be contested, at least, spoken against and no matter how little progress we make, campaigns must be consistent and carried out0 with every bit of social and official vigour.
Religion is about peace, every religion in my view — personal peace, social stability and order, and a disciplined good life. In our part of the world, and perhaps everywhere, religion is employed as a powerful social and emotional tool for reprehensible ends. The most tragic use of religion is for justification of violence in general and against polio vaccination teams in particular. The rational and thinking sector of the Pakistani clergy has an obligation to stand up against religious bigotry. Perhaps, they will make a better impression in our struggle against poliovirus.
The good part of the story is that a large part of society is supportive of anti-polio efforts. Eliminating this virus will make our children and cities safe, and the world at large, safer.

Sir, how come that you know so much about the backgroun on the subject and NP takes the events on their face values only? The invisible enemy was recently observed in Israel and has now been seen in Syria as well. When is it going to hit Europe?
Rex Minor
@np: You are correct. After many rumors about Dr Shakil Afridi running polio tests the latest version is that he was running hepatitis B tests on a door to door basis so that he could produce DNA evidence for the CIA about the residents of a particular house in Abbottabad.
It has also come to light that the US has a vast network of paid informers throughout Pakistan and invariably they belong to organizations who are running vaccine programs. As a result the Taliban, and others, view health workers with grave suspicion. In effect, whether we like it or not, the CIA, with Dr Shahil Afridi's assistance, has brought the health system of Pakistan, and particularly the Waziristan area, into disrepute.
Although the Hippocratic Oath of "Doing No Harm" may have become meaningless, Dr Afridi did never-the-less pretend to be helping children when in fact he was carrying out a spying operation on behalf of a foreign power. I for one do not wish to have people such as Dr Afridi ministering to my loved ones, and it would appear that many other people in Pakistan do not wish to have Dr Afridi types inflicted on their loved ones either, regardless of whether the problem is polio or hepatitis B.
@Rex Minor: You still did not explain why it is okay to kill polio vaccinators and put other people's kids at risk EVEN IF you do not want your kid to have that medicine.
@Izhar: "For your information, US used Dr Shakil Afridi who used Polio teams as informers which is basic reason of hate against polio teams. "
Factually incorrect:
1) The conspiracy theory that polio vaccine is a plot by Western countries to make Muslims impotent and reduce their population is at least 10 years old and greatly predates the Abbotabad operation. This rumour was spread far and wide including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, India and of course Pakistan (all countries with large Muslim populations) and impacted the polio eradication program in each of these countries adversely.
2) Shakil Afridi's unauthorized inoculation program was for hepatitis not polio
3) Even if someone feels that they do not want to allow their kids to take the polio vaccine due to the Afridi episode, how does it justify killing polio workers?
@author Why depend on "clergy", which Islam does not have? The rational and thinking segment of the population has the obligation to understand their religion and prevent its abuse by bigots.

How and why was the beginning of the padagogy.While I do not question your sincerety regarding the use of medication for immunity against the polio virus, it is futile to generalise those who refuse such mesures on accont of personal security. The USA is droning women and children in the tribl territoris of Pakistan after receiving the coordinates for oeration from an individual ho could be a polio program work carryin a mobile telephone or the meication itself ith a micro module which sends the loction signals or whatever. This is one reason I could think of and ther are certainly more reasons for it. I say war Zone since the USA has declared the entire world.as a war Zone...
Let me explain, for the first time in the history of the free world we have a situation whereby the USA has the complete control over the digital communication net work including mobile phones traffic.. Further more, the illegal activities undertaken by its 'PRISM' spy net work employing a million plus people, has damaged the TRUST partnership with the USA.

If it is possible to get a severe reaction to vaccines I have to be at the top of the list, and one vaccine has caused me permanent damage, although the medical world will never admit to it. However, I was administered the oral polio vaccine so long ago I can barely remember it, and everything has been OK. There is always an element of risk, but in the case of polio it is worth it. It is akin to Damocles sword hanging over children's heads for ever if they do not receive the vaccine. Unfortunately, it would appear that Dr Shakil Afridi's activities have created a grave disservice to the polio program in some areas of Pakistan.society. .
@Rex Minor: " I would not allow some one foreign whom I do not trust giving something oral to my child!!- I hope you mean the foreign vaccinator. But the polio team comprises of the local pakistanis. . You and likes have taken a stand first and then looking for the rationale which is laughable. By your logic you should not use medicines too as the same is manufactured in a country you do not trust.
For your information, US used Dr Shakil Afridi who used Polio teams as informers which is basic reason of hate against polio teams. Although I agreed with Doctors that kids should have polio vaccine.
Anyone of you utter a word of the shameful act of US to use the team in Pakistan and now we are in problem.
@Rex Minor: But wait, by your previous Polio postings YOU didn't know that in Pakistan the Polio Vaccine was given orally rather than with a jab of a needle!!! BTW, does that also make you "ignorant"??? As for your sanitary/source comment, Polio has been eradicated from almost the whole world by the use of vaccines, and they are considered the ONLY weapon against this crippling disease!
@Rex Minor: It is not foreigners who are administering the vaccine. The conspiracy theories about polio vaccine are it new? The slowed down progress of polio in any country with a sizeable population including India, Bangladesh and Indonesia but they overcame the cynicism. This problem existed in Pakistan well before it became the war zone it currently is. So please do not confuse issues.
Also unless you were living under a rock somewhere you would know that the problem is not just of an individual rejecting polio vaccination for their own child but killing polio workers so that no kids can get the vaccine,
pakistan needs more grass and nuclear bomb than polio vaccines........
@Vakil: HAHAHA, great Sarcasm!
@Solomon2: @sid:
Ignorant is the author, who is not in the medical profession but security branch but not once writes in the article why people refuse to take preventive measures! Also he shold know that the vaccination against polio is carried out oraly in Pakistan and not with a jab. I would not allow some one foreign whom I do not trust giving something oral to my child!!
Improve pubic sanitory facilities including the sewage, identify the source of the virus and not willy nilly carry on the anti virus campaign in a country which has been declared a WAR ZONE.
Rex Minor
Did the previous government or the current one, take even a single measure to assure all the sections of public, the reasons and authenticity of the vaccine program...shows the absolute apathy present in our society.... If nothing,at least tell these people belonging in the times of jahilliyah, that even the Saudis have allowed this.
India's total population is WAY bigger than Pakistan's, so is India's Muslim population compared to Pakistan's. Yet India has been declared polio-free for past 3 years. All those who talk of India's toilets and decade old poverty figures need to have a look at that. On this very same website, in the past, I have seen few commenters accusing polio campaign to be a western conspiracy to destroy Pakistan and even going ahead to claim that Pakistanis should not fall 'victim' to this "evil campaign" as, as per them, polio is not that big of a deal. "Many children in Balochistan are born every year that never get polio vaccination and are still healthy" was one such fellow's logic. When ignorance is such high among even seemingly literate Pakistanis, it explains why the country is in such a bad shape today.
This so-called "polio virus" was in fact invented by Israelis and is being disseminated into the Muslim population of the world by the Mossad.... and to counter it (an eye-wash in reality), there is now supposedly a "vaccine" invented by Jewish-American scientist with a Hindu wife that is out to STERILIZE the entire world (esp the Muslim World) ... the sooner that citizens of Pakistan realize it, the better they can stand up against these CONSPIRACIES and be counted as a true world leader!!!
Pakistan is also endangering the world by this.....This is be done in war footing.....How can people be so ignorant which finishes child's future........hope for best
