The announcement was made in Oslo, Norway today.
Malala was nominated for her tireless efforts to promote women’s education, despite an assassination attempt and continuous threats from the Taliban.
In her first statement after the announcement Malala stated, "I am happy that I was nominated for the Nobel Peace Price and it was a great honour for me."
She added, "I will continue to campaign for peace, education and women empowerment."
She also congratulated the winner, OPCW for their humanitarian efforts.
There were 259 candidates contending for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2013 including Russian President Vladimir Putin and whistleblowers Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning.
Set up in 1997 to eliminate all chemicals weapons worldwide, the OPCW's mission gained critical importance this year after a sarin gas strike in the suburbs of Damascus killed more than 1,400 people in August.

When people said Malala was 'the front runner' or 'favourite to win,' was that based on anything beyond bookies' odds?
— Omar Waraich (@OmarWaraich) October 11, 2013
Not winning the Nobel doesnt take anything away from the extraordinarily brave & determined #Malala may she go from strength 2 strength
— Ayesha Tammy Haq (@tammyhaq) October 11, 2013
Malala's actions and resilience have probably done more to stir debate on women's place in Pakistani society than any prize ever could

@csmann: Dear csmann. Thank you for my promotion to "Genius", and your agreement with my Malala assessment. It is reassuring to see you get something right for a change. In regard to your OBL, Abbottabad, and other doubtful assessments, I may start believing them when you find the so called Iraqi "weapons of mass destruction". In the meantime I do not think that ET will provide space for the 100,000 word dissertation required to analyze the doubtful explanations, which have emanated from Washington over the last 13 years or so, but which you, incredibly, appear to believe. . ..
Hi, Malala is a nice girl and every thing ......... but can any one tell that now in what grade she is studying currently, i mean what will she be in future, she enjoying trips all over world, when she go to school??????? what will she be in future, a doctor, eng, scientist or what??? she is just wandering like a student who bunk class and enjoy trips on a beach or park!!!! Hey MALALA start studying girl, dont waste time already you have wasted a lot......all students around you at your age are going school or college and you are wasting time enjoying!!!!!!!!!
@Sexton Blake: Much obliged. Was much expected of you- the " Genius " that still believes OBL was not killed at Abbotabad ,and sundry conspiracy theories. P.S. I agree with your assessment of Malala though.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: Dear Bakhtiyiar Ghazi Khan, Do not worry too much about the idiot remarks from csmann. I have been waiting a very long time for him to say something complimentary about Pakistan.
@Ali S: Believe me Julian Assange deserves more.
What any remarkable thing she has done for which she had to be awarded Nobel peace prize and Malala didn't deserve Nobel Peace Prize?Malala is being promoted in the world by the international media just because she was only against Taliban and any one who is only against Taliban is always appreciated, admired and awarded because West and US are against Taliban.....
@Khurram Awan: Yeah man you're right. Every girl is going to school and nowadays they're one step ahead from guys, lol. Even in cities like Karachi where I'm from females are getting more jobs than men and that's no good. Anyways only going to school teaches you nothing if you don't get the proper home education first. My mother had only done her matriculation but is 1000 time better than educated women and girls.
@Kaal Chakra: I certainly don't know it from some semi-literate/illiterate mullah's hatred based fantasy. They have elite students like you to understand their higher sciences. One look at wikipedia will open your closed mind to the genius of Abdussalaam.Get help from a high school kid if your super-brain is unable to decipher his theories.
Csmann . Do you know why Asdnsalam was given the prize? Think of what I wrote earlier.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: Don't whine like many Pakistanis. HAve your government nominate Mr. Edhi next year. Dont expect Nobel Foundation to discover him because it is by nomination only.YOu should personally do this since you feel so strong about it.Let us see next year that we have Edhi on the ballot by your efforts.Hold the whines, and conspiracy theories till then One thing you cleverly failed to mention is the 50000 of your co-citizens murdered and over 100,000 maimed by your favourites TTP thugs.Dont be a covert Talib or their apologist..And work with mullahs and other hate-churning machines in Pakistan to have them stop inciting hatred and violence and teach love and peace, and not restore to bombs whenever they feel like it. May be then there wont be no 911,2611,nairobis etc. and no need for drones and wars.
If anyone deserves a Nobel prize from Pakistan, its Abdul Sattar Edhi. Not to mention the thousands of NGO workers caring for Afghan refugees, and the victims of Drone strikes, and those civilians maimed by the illegal war on Afghanistan by foreign armies from every country. Let her do something for Pakistani people, and not be a puppet for the demonization of Pakistan.
It was silly of people around Malala to promote this hype that she is a frontrunner, tipped to win Nobel etc. Nobel Prize is given to someone with a body of work spread over several years, several decades, not someone who has worked for a couple years mainly through courageous statements. Like Malala herself has said, she has a long way to go and has to do a lot more work, but people who are feeding off her are more impatient.
@kaalchakra: First check with self and your county's Taliban supporters,e-Talibans,covert Talibans and others if she is going to be considered muslim;then convince these 60-70% Pakistanis that worked against her getting the Nobel Prize.Islam will get peace prize one day, when bigots like you stop the murderous agenda of TTP and AL-Qaida network.. ANd also;earn to cherish and claim people who get these prizes. It is you and your ilk that make abdussalam to be excommunicated, and caluminated.
@leela: You mean Hafiz Saeed of JuD or Nitish Kumar of JD(U), i.e. Janata Dal (United) CM of Bihar in India? Both were leading candidates!
@Ahmed: You are right ! Jalny waloo ka moo kaala
@kaalchakra: You are grossly wrong! Like me, millions were praying she would get it. The only 'catch' could have been that if she got it, TTP would have got 'left-handed credit' for Pakistan's first Nobel!
@Khurram Awan: You have big mouth to say 'Karachi and Punjab'! What exactly do you mean by that? Why not Sindh and Punjab? or why not Balochistan Khyber Sindh and Punjab? This old silly tactics of you brainwashed people is why there is no unity in Pakistan.
I am surprised that JuD was not nominated and selected for the Nobel Peace prize, given their peaceful efforts in Pakistan.
While Malala is a brave girl and has donned the mantle of speaking up for education of female Muslim children in Pakistan, it is still premature to see her 'actual' contributions that will have made a difference.
I want my daughter to follow her .
Malala still wins. It is Pakistan that has deservingly lost because of its attitude towards her.
It is a plot against Pakistan. Conspiracy by CIA/Mossad/RAW.
@Muslim Leaguer: If you are right in your absurd opinion, why would so many European nations acknowledge Malala with prizes, from the EU's Sakharov Peace prize, Simone De Bouvoir prize - France, Peace prize from Britain and so on... Her headscarf or religion are not relevant in the west where passports do NOT state a person's religion which is considered a personal view, as it should be...
As Malala herself said it doesn't matter if she doesn't win the Nobel Peace prize. She is dedicated with passion to great causes, the equality of women, education for all children, freedom of thought and more. At her young age to have such clear thoughts instead of being interested as most young teenagers in clothes, music, fun etc is in itself remarkable. She has been showered with many prizes, the Simone Beauvoir amongst others, much well deserved prestige. Three Cheers for this Great Lady of our Century!!!
Malala could not win the Nobel Prize because: 1. She talks about Islamic teachings apart from promoting education. The Jewish lobby is allergic to Islam. 2. She wears a headscarf which is not tolerated by the legislators of many European governments. 3. She is just 16 years old while Nobel Prize is usually given to the people with average age of over 60years.
For the doubters on this link, imagine yourself taking on a public role for girls education in an area where the Taliban are dominant, going home in a school bus and being pulled out by a murderering terrorist who asks for her by name and shoots her and her friend in the head, going through a year of therapy and learning how to talk and walk again, getting out of the hospital and rehab and talking to the UN general assembly, undaunted by the suits and very serious people, going on talk shows with American media personality - think about this and think: would you be able to do this? this is truly and exceptional girl who fought her way through incredible adversity and came out ahead, and is now a living champion for the downtrodden and deprived. think about it and you may change your mind.
She is getting FREE education in UK. Her family is getting free money to live in UK. After few years she will be supporting Muslim Ummah's conspiracy theories and asking for Sharia in UK.
Muslims are being discriminated. Muslims should have their own Nobel Prize.........like Islamic Nobel Prize which can be given to Muslims, like Malala, Osama Bin Laden, Mehsud and daughter of Pakistan (Aafia Siddiqui). Pakistan should immediately take up this matter with OIC.
My faith in Nobel is restored, sorry for Malala but she was more a media hype than a preacher for education
We are appalled to see how many Malala haters post their vitriol here. Is it because Pakistani women are gaining more fame than the men. I am given to understand that most entities are male dominated but slowly women are breaking those barriers & the men are running scared! Since it's inception the majority have been men rule, and looking at the sad state of affairs it's time for women to take over & get rid of corruption, load shedding, rising commodity prices, traffic congestion & inept Government protection. A country that does not respect its women & children is a lost nation. Malala has moved hearts in America, school children in major cities & towns are celebrating next week as Malala Day! Young students are breaking their savings banks to help her cause, they have been educated how some countries like Pakistan cannot protect their children going to school! American media has gone wild crazy that such a young polished girl can standup against the Taliban while the men hide the Malala haters are being drowned by the huge voice to support a small but power girl named Malala!
Give Malala some awards like Nishan-e-Pakistan or Nishan-e-Taliban. Pakistanis should appoint her as president of Pakistan. Pakistan can use Malala to get some more zakat from Western countries, like money to build colleges and schools for girls plus free scholarships for Muslim women in who want to study in West. Does any one know how many schools talibans destroyed to keep Muslim girls safe from adult Muslim men?
I am 100% sure that every year poor Alfred Nobel must be turning in his grave when Nobel Prize for Peace is announced! But this year he turned twice when Malala didn't get it! I don't think there was any other candidate more deserving than her!
The only organization that has demonstrated some maturity in its decision-making. The West clearly has gone berserk on Malala, and all of a sudden everey award ison firesale!!! Don't get me wrong -- the girl is bright and brave, but the hype created by is disproportionate and absurd! We have 100's, if not 1000's examples where girls went thru a lot more, the recent killing of female students in Quetta is a case in point, but no-one has the decency of even making a mention about them, and just focussed on parroting Malala, like "look what I found"!
I was moved by the interview of Malala. It doesn't matter what prize she gets. She is courageous and extremely mature for a girl of her age. It shows the world that even with all its drawbacks Pakistan can produce women of such an immense strength. Kudos to her and Pakistan.
As for Pakistani people missing out on an opportunity for a Nobel prize --- well you have a bigger prize to take. If a little girl can stand against Taliban and their ideology, whey not other people. Why not the government, which is partly afraid and partly complicit in ruining your country. Sometimes 1 bold person is enough to motivate others to take a stand against wrong ideologies and oppression.
It would have been good if Malala could have been allowed to stay in Pakistan, her safety guaranteed and nurtured.
Malala does not need any awards, awards need Malala. This girl will do great things in life. Pakistanis, own her now or never complain again that you always get corrupt leaders. She is from your soil, she has your blood. If you want a prosperous Pakistan, stop disowning your gems!
Thanks alot. I yet not understand for what they are giving Noble. Its just a politics done by Americans. Imran Khan did much much more than her. He even implemented what he said. Abdur Sattar Ehdhi , Chhipa & many more what she did. Its just a joke.
'Pakistan – most violent country in world – hoping for a Nobel Peace Prize !'
And now: Unrealistic hope for Nobel Peace Prize falls flat on the face of stupid Pakistanis !!
In 1971, the same unrealistic thought process hoped to win the East Pakistan (Bangladesh) Genocidal War --- resulting 93000 bangles (handcuffs) wearing war criminals taken into Bangladesh and Indian prisons !!!
Unrealistic hope of Nobel Peace Prize falls flat on the face of stupid Pakistanis !
Nobel Prize is an institution. It bestows recognition for some exceptional work or achievement by individuals or groups. Malala's only achievement was a little courage to speak against the Taliban like half of Pakistan today. The result was a prized icon for western interests. Compare the life long work of Edhi with Malala. Who deserved the Nobel prize more? The Nobel committee has made an appropriate decision and did not belittle the institution of 'Nobel Prize'.
Noble prize is not what its founder NOBLE wanted it to be.Now it is politically awarded and not on merit. If it could be awarded to the biggest terrorist President Obamano woder it is so down graded it is a blessing Mallala din't get it.Thanks ALLAH SWT.for this grace AMEEN.
I have thought for some that the Nobel Peace Prize does not necessarily go to the best contender, and in my view the latest recipient should not have received it. However, I do not think that Malala will be slashing her wrists over this minor set back. If we could have twenty or so people like Malala in positions of world power perhaps the world would be a better place. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of such people in the most powerful places.
The Nobel Peace Prize is only awarded to those serving Western interests.
How do they know she was nominated? Nobel nominees are kept secret. There's no official nomination and no official nominees.
Edhi deserves a Nobel, Malala deserves an Oscar.
@Sara Khan: I feel pity on people like you. You are just product of some oh ah moment.
correct headline should be " No Malala for Nobel"
Malala is an inspiration for millions of children of the subcontinent. She is already a winner.
@Dajjal:
Thank God!! Atleast someone is sane........
@Salma: How about renaming everything on Earth to MALALA....Pathetic!!
Sympathies as there are with this kid for all she had to go through but honestly her image has been exploited beyond thinkable. Every other person I meet in US wants to know how hard it was for me as a to get educated because all they know now is that girls get shot because they want to go to School! With Malala's potryal as a saviour of all pakistani grils, harder it is for us to convince foreigners that the reality couldn't be more different. All the big universities accross Pakistan have an overewhelming percentage of female students. The fact that hardly .01% of an area where modern education was being targetted at gunpoint, shouldnt not paint the picture for whole Pakistan. I do however sympathize with Malala. More power to her in what is she doing. But let the child be the child she is..
@Sara Khan I am sure you will win Nobel for best Imagination.
I feel sorry for the young girl who is being used by everyone including his father. May God help her.
She is a COWARD!! Why not come back and go to school in Swat if she claims to be a braveheart. Instead she goes to school in some English suburb. Come back to Pakistan Malala, come back to Swat to your school and then campaign for your Vision. Its sad to see how cheap one can be for fame and the riches, but then again, its a profession for Pakistanis. Atleast, the two week long drama is finally over and no more pathetic Malala headlines to see on the Tribune front page.
It's good that Malala didn't get Nobel; as the Nobel is awarded only to unworthy people.
Malala, you are only 16 years old and the whole life is ahead of you, keep up the good work and remember that you are loved by the millions all over the world. You are inspiration to the kids around the world and some of the schools in the US are still showing your speech at the UN to their students to inspire them. May God bless you and your efforts and determination.
Did anyone really imagine they would give the award to a Muslim? What would the Israeli, Indian, and American lobbies do with their monies if the award went to a Pakistan? Shame on those who discriminate.
@Sara Khan: Malala may win an award or not, I am sure you CAN win the Oscar for meanest comments!. Kudos.
@Congratulations OPCW;: "The Nobel Prizes decision committee are the world analytical, logical and visionary people". Oh Yeah, awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama was such logical and visionary step by the Nobel committee. Could any one tell me what is his accomplishment for this prize, he certainly has killed more innocent civilians in Tribal Areas of Pakistan than Bush did. Let us not deny it that it has become more and more political over the years.
There is no shame in being the runner up for the Nobel Peace Prize!
And, there is no victory in that for the Taliban. Her messages are just as pertinent and the Taliban are as repugnant and ignorant as ever.
The Nobel Peace Prize lost its credibility when they failed to give Gandhi ,but they did damage control by not having a Peace Prize on 1948 to remind everyone that they overlooked it...
It took further hit when Henry Kissinger and Mother Teresa received it .....
The biggest joke was pulled when they gave Obama..now Nobel Peace Prize is as irrelevant as the Miss World title.....
@Khurram Awan
Your village is not the whole Pakistan. Consider your self lucky to be living in a village where education in cherished and promoted. But, I am wondering what kind of education are you all getting? Cause although you have access to the internet but still choose to remain ignorant about the plight of others in your country.
I am sick and tired of Malala, that darling of the western and local media. She has marketed herself very well, though. She deserves a Nobel for that.
Imran Khan and mullah parties will be very happy that Malala did not win.
nobel prize or not...i dont care...but why include tweets of famous nobodies like the zardari clan in the article...they never did anything worthwhile to actually be worthy of comenting....hadbeens shud stay in their cocoons
I am sure she will win Oscar's best female actor award....
Nobel Prize was a competition between agents, one lost to the other, whats the big deal.
if you know what I am saying.....chill
The Noble Prize committee was informed that Malala wants peace and the post of a Prime Minister, not only a prize?
Rex Minor
@Mubashir: Since this award is a political tool they couldnt have given it to Putin who stopped WW3.
@Khurram Awan: Don't you want Pakistanis to follow "true Islam"? Taliban are trained to force Muslims to follow "true Islam". Pakistan created Taliban to turn Afghanistan into an Islamic Emirates. Time for payback, Afghanistan should help Taliban take over Pakistan.
At least give her a cookie if not a noble prize
Actually Malala's Father is using is daughter for what he reported in the letters to England! He thought of letting his daughter be in the limelight to make mega bucks! Though Malala only spoke for what she had been told! Using such a child is a bad thing!
Lets send a drone victim next time for Noble Peace prize.
And how it always is, Pakistan will suspect conspiracy!! the whole world is conspiring against Pakistan while pakistan remains this innocent, naive, righteous, and peace loving state!
What is the criteria for being awarded or even nominated for a noble ?....Wouldn't they atleast look at some of the achievements of the nominee ? And what are the achievements of Malala ? Surviving headshot ? :/ (Or am I missing something?)
in more important news ptcl has blocked facebook, tango and viber. RIP technology!
Shimon perez and Minachem Begin the two israeli presidents with excellent peace efforts have won the noble peace prize. I don't want to go into detail but these two are more of a war mongers than peace laureates. Similarly our good old Barack obama won the peace prize for doing nothing and was found scratching his head that why is was awarded one. Rather he is the architect of the CIA drone warfare in Yemen and Pakistan. So I am not surprised that Malala did not get it. She could have won it if she was a political tool of a western country. I think next time they should award it to CIA for their peace efforts around the globe.
@Dasmir: sorry, but this is not a popularity contest.
YES!!! AMEEN! in your malala!!
How about Malala Peace Prize instead of nobel piece (aka peace) prize.
Some Pakistani brethren and sisters offered prayers of thanks as the news was disclosed since Pakistan was saved from a huge embarrassment of winning a Nobel Prize.
You would ultimately win! Even getting nominated is a great honor for Malala and Pakistan. Sadly I noticed conspiracy theories still infecting the minds of Pakistanis. If PK loses a Cricket match it's conspiracy, if Malala does not win Nobel Prize, it's conspiracy, etc. Come out from this mind set before we destroy our self and blame others.
I hope Malala gets it one day but OPCW well deserved it
Glad she did not win . She did not reach NOBEL level.
It would definitely sooth many ego-s
Congrats to OPCW and Malala, but personally I thought Edward Snowden deserved the prize because what he exposed directly affects each and everyone of us - we all use the internet and have no idea when what can be used against us.
Sanity prevails! @Khurram Dude, even in this region, nobody stops girls from going to school. A couple of isolated incidents shouldn't be news enough to generalize an entire region as well.
Nobel peace prize is a joke...even Adolf Hitler was nominated for it a year before the world war 2 started!
I think its a blessing in disguise for her...She will have some peace now as she was badly hounded by the mere nomination...this nation does not deserve great things....
Getting Nobel for Malala was an over expectation which was beyond her quality and qualification. If she want to do something for her country Nobel is not precondition ,Go ahead.
Should have gone to Putin
Maybe She will get a Golden Globe Nomination (Supporting Actress) for her performance on the Daily Show With Jon Stewart... she will certainly win that...
Malala Yousufzai did not need Nobel. Nobel needed her. It's Nobel's loss; not hers. We are still proud of you, Malala.
Coming this far is an honour in itself. I still believed she deserved more than the organization who have actually got it.
Nothing missed. Dont worry, You are in good company with Mahatma Gandhi;.
How many in the world know the winner of this year's Peace prize? Whole world knows Malala. That is her Global Peace Prize rather Noble Peace Prize. Way to go Malala. Bravo! May you all be blessed with hundreds of Malala!
Nobel Price could not win Malala.
very well said Parvez
The world is not child that one can make it fool through media courage, propaganda and over exaggerations of the petty issue. The Nobel Prizes decision committee are the world analytical, logical and visionary people. OPCW has been playing brilliant role for the establishment of world peace and serving humanity. To delay or avoid the WW-III, OPCW has very significant role and those scientists are the real servant of world peace and humanity. Many congratulations to OPCW and they surely deserved it.
They have given it to a much deserving. http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2013/press.pdf
well.. she is a winner in my heart and in the hearts of Billions around the world.. :-)
It doesn't matter. She is above these prizes.
Her faith in education and becoming a symbol for education is the best nobel prize for Pakistan. As Pakistani I dont felt any kind of Plot as has been pointed out by my kind friend. She have a long life and numerous things to do to prove her ability for the Nobel prize. Wish u best of Luck Malala
Malala herself is Nobel
In a few years, Nobel peace award committee will announce the award for the 'Nobel committee' itself. Afterall these officials have served the cause of 'peace' far more than individuals!
Before that they may go on awarding any NGO/govt. that they can think of - as this world is unworthy of individual heros. They have to be an organization or head of govt.
Strange is the logic. But, then the 5 member committee is selected by Norway govt. So, they can't be above thinking officials know the best!!
I just want to give a small message to Malala that kindly next time dont give sweeping statements about the whole of Pakistan. In Karachi and in Punjab no one force the girls to stop going to school or to get education. Our women are educated and i live in a small village in Punjab and i dont know a single house where there is any problem regarding to the Girl's education. Giving statements like No Girl goes to school in Pakistan and No Girl have any right in Pakistan and it is a Malala who will give all the rights to them is utterly false concept and the New Stereotype by the West . We love our Mothers and Sisters and we wish that every girl goes to school to get education and no one is forcing us to do that and also No Taliban lives in the whole of Pakistan like some people are trying to portray here. The problems of some regions of Pakistan must not be imposed as a Generalized problem of the whole of Pakistani Society.
Never mind, your efforts and courage doesnt need any award as people already have their hearts with you..
One that took real bullet fired from a real gun not berween her teeth but on head, and survived and more energetic before that,Nobel Peace Prize will come eventually! She has to keep pushing for education for all children specially girls. I am hopeful.
She has done amazing things, Nobel or no Nobel, and her real award awaits in the afterlife. May Allah continue to guide and bless her and may she always keep us all so proud and blessed. Amen
Thanks God. Success for Taliban lol. She is 16 and she wants to become PM of Pakistan. She will wait for 19 more years (I guess) to become PM of Pak.
Dirty politics once again. No wonder Nobel Peace Prize credibility is so low.
Now waiting for comments "they were grooming her"?!
Being nominated was in itself an honour............this girl is meant for bigger things. My God bless her and keep her safe.
