Two proclaimed offenders were allegedly shot dead in police encounters late Tuesday night in Rawalpindi.
Airport police succeeded in killing a most wanted man, involved in raping and stabbing a number of women during robberies. The rapist- robber, identified as Safdar Ayaz, 32, was killed in an exchange of fire with the police, after fleeing from a house in Wakeel Colony, Gulraiz. The police informed the media that Safdar held daggers and pistols in his hands.
According to the police, he had entered the house with two of his accomplices, but the inmates woke up and raised an alarm, forcing the robbers to flee. The family called Rescue 15 which alerted a police mobile team patrolling the area under the supervision of Station House Officer (SHO) Azhar Shah.
The police said that the robbers opened fire at the police team and one of the men was killed in retaliatory firing. He was later identified as Ayaz. The man belonged to Soon Sakesar, Khushab.
SHO Shah said Ayaz was involved in raping women and stabbing them to death during robberies in Tulsa, Lal Kurti and many places in the jurisdiction of the airport and civil lines police. “He also stabbed the daughter of an army officer after raping her in civil lines some time ago.”
His body was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital for a postmortem examination.
In the second incident, Waris Khan and RA Bazaar police jointly raided a house in Amir Colony after receiving information about the presence of a proclaimed offender, Raheel Ahmad.
Ahmad was wanted for the murder of Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Raja Imran Khalid, who was gunned down by the accused during an exchange of fire in March this year.
Several cases of terrorism, murder, attempted murder, robberies and car theft were registered against the accused in various police stations of the city. The police said the accused and his brother started firing upon the police team when authorities surrounded the house. “The firing continued for around two hours and a police officer ASI Manzar Abbas was injured seriously,” said Inspector Malik Yousaf.
He said Ahmad was shot and injured while trying to escape and succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital. The police have arrested his brother and three women on charges of providing shelter to a proclaimed offender and injuring a police officer. The injured police officer was shot thrice in the abdomen and legs. However, his condition is reported to be stable.
Cases have been registered against the three women and the brother of the slain suspect.
