"Corruption is the root cause of most of the problems in Pakistan and with my prior experience in curbing it, I plan to make an improved effort against it," he said while talking to Express News.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah had confirmed earlier in the day that the government and the opposition had agreed to name Zaman as the new chairman of the anti-graft body -- the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Zaman had previously served as the Interior Secretary in 2009. Zaman had also served as aide-de-camp (ADC) to the late General Ziaul Haq.
Zaman who has announced his retirement from his post as interior secretary is now meeting with PM Nawaz Sharif.
Speaking to the media, Shah said that all parties were taken on board before the decision was taken, however, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson said the party's standpoint on the issue was not taken.
According to Express News, the decision was taken after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif spoke to the opposition leader over the phone earlier during the day.
The position of NAB Chairman was last occupied by Admiral (Retd) Fasih Bokhari, who was forced to vacate the position in May after the Supreme Court declared his appointment illegal.
The government had been under pressure from the Supreme Court over the appointment of a NAB head. The apex court had also threatened the government with ‘consequences’ if it delayed the appointment.

wow
They should have instead chosen some former FBR senior officer for this post. This clearly appears to be the murder of merit to me. There can't ever be true accountability in Pakistan, if things go on as they do now. NAB, unfortunately, is just a tool to apprehend the less powerful for the political benefit of the more powerful.
@Syed A. Mateen:
Your expectations are too unrealistic and will be dashed. Not much will happen. We have been trying to do the things you mention for at least 64 years.
FBR is beyond help. I honestly think that some part of tax collection should be handed over to the private sector. .
Don't know how to react to yet another protest call by sir imran khan after seeing this: http://www.insaf.pk/News/tabid/60/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/3213/PTI-Islamabad-protests-in-solidarity-with-Secretary-interior-Ch-Qamar-Zaman.aspx teenage saga of adult khan continues!!!
A good decision by the government. Qamar Zaman is an officer of Pakistan Administrative Service/DMG and considered to be a very upright and talented officer. I hope he will do the job well.
The Chairman NAB should be well versed with through investigations, independent, result oriented and can bring back the looted money by Pakistanis from abroad as well as within the country.
I except from the newly appointed Chairman NAB that he will improve the position of government's kitty and will open and pursue all the pending cases to recover the illegally accumulated wealth and will also help FBR by pointing out the discrepancies and will make special efforts to dispose off properties in the open market of all the bank's defaulters.
Opponents created so much fuss (unnecessarily) about Admiral Fasih Bukhari's daughter's past employment with the Behria Town. With a sitting MPA daughter, on a reserved seat, this dude is surely much more political, and is definitely a no no.
How can a serving government official be considered for the post of Chairman NAB,when he is still serving?.This is a clear violation of the stipulated rules and is illegal. The process of consultatation/approval between the PM and the Opposition leader took place when Mr.Qamar was still serving and not retired. Thus his appointment is illegal and could be challenged in a Court of Law.Therefore,it could also be a deliberate attempt on the part of the PM/Opposition leader to appoint the NAB chairman in a controversial manner. If removed by the court it would be to their advantage and if allowed to continue it would also be to their advantage. This is politicking and called,' have your cake and eat it too'.
The way the process was carried out was more a selection made to accomodate both sides.........as such his crdibility is already suspect.
PTI has to take its time now and be more aware of contenders.
Nature can't be changed and Mr. Nawaz Sharif has proved it once again. RIP democracy, Marshal Laws are much better.
Will he be working for the country, let see how his conscious will deliver merit, honesty and justice.PPP and PML N made rules for their personal protection. Not for the public.
Another Chaoudry......
Shairfs and Chaudris - elected from Punjab to run show Pakistan
Now, the reason is quite clear why EVERY effort made to ensure IK is not the opposition leaders !!
Her daughter is a sitting MPA of PNL-N. It ought to be enough for his disqualification.
Consensus that neither PML(N) or PPP will be taken to task for all the cases pending against them.
I came to know about him while searching eid holidays on ministry of interior website. He was secretary to Govt, dept of interior Pakistan. and as we know, only Ch. Nisar Ali Khan is independent minister and so he does not need a sharif brothers-close secretary like Qamar Zaman. All other departments are controlled by Sharif Brothers through secretaries of respective departments.
