The paintings show rural women, the relationship between a mother and her child, urban architecture, snake charmers and couples in love.
A paintings exhibition by Bengali artist Jahangir Hossain titled The Colour of Mind opened at Hamail Art Gallery on Wednesday.
The exhibition was inaugurated by artist Saeed Akhtar. As many as 53 paintings of oil on canvas, oil on paper and acrylic on paper were displayed.
The paintings show rural women, the relationship between a mother and her child, urban architecture, snake charmers and couples in love.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Akhtar said, “It is good to see some traditional Bangladeshi art displayed in Pakistan.”
Cartoonist Muddassir Butt, said, “I’m amazed by Hossain’s work. His depiction of the female form reminds me of the retro cartoon styles from 1950s.”
Talking to The Express Tribune, Hossain said, “I have tried to portray the Bangladeshi culture using the female form as inspiration.”
“The background of Hossain’s paintings is colourful and has soft tones. His mode of expression is figurative, expressionist and at times, abstract,” said Jamil Ahmed, the curator of the Hamail Art Gallery.
Bashir Hossain, another Bengali artist, said “The figures in the paintings stand out. The artist has used space to interact with the observer.”
The exhibition will go on till October 10.
