The anti-polio drive in the division started on Monday. The drive aims at giving the vaccine to 16 million children under the age of five years.


A Health Department spokesman said that the three-day drive would be carried out in Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Chiniot.  Health teams ohad been directed to be available at hospitals, basic health units, rural health centres and dispensaries till Thursday. In Bahawalpur, the department aims at giving vaccine to 545,198 children in the three days. As many as 1,269 health teams have been deputed for the campaign. Of these, 105 teams are performing duties at transit points, including bus stands, railway stations and airports.

Another 1,019 teams have been appointed for the door-to-door campaign, while 145 teams have been appointed for vaccination at hospitals, markets, etc. Dr Rao Zakir Ali, the focal person for the campaign, said that 27 polio cases had been reported in Pakistan during the last year. Of these, he said, six were reported from Bahawalpur district. Five of them were girls.
