AMRITSAR: Awais Sheikh – lawyer of deceased Indian spy Sarabjit Singh - has taken permanent refuge in Sweden, Times of India (TOI) reported on Monday.
The move comes months after his alleged abduction in Lahore. Since he first took up Sarabjit’s case in June 2009, Sheikh had said he received many threats.
While speaking to TOI, Sheikh said, “Sweden has granted me permanent stay along with my family and has also provided me all facilities and security after taking note of my abduction and physical torture.”
He further said that his life in Pakistan was under “constant threat from people and organisations that were inimical to India-Pakistan friendship.”
"During my stay in Pakistan after the abduction attempt, there were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested but I did not give myself up to despair," he said.
Sarabjit Singh
Indian spy Sarabjit was sentenced 16 years ago over deadly bombings in Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore.
He had slipped into a coma after suffering multiple serious injuries when six prisoners attacked him on April 26 at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail, hitting him on the head with bricks and fracturing his skull.
He passed away in May at Jinnah hospital in Lahore.

The relatives of the people whom Raymond Davis allegedly killed gave him a free passage to USA as per Sharia and pardoned him. What did they get in return? Visa to America.
nice way of getting asylum...... go for high profile controversial case
It is pathetic pakistanis are making a joke of the serious issue of threats from jihadists. hard to find a honest lawyer like him. The same people who supported Zia 20yrs back can realize what the state of the society they helped create.
Looks like everyone abandoning the sinking ship. No one wats to live here. Thanks to monsters!
@Someone:
Perhaps you are a patriotic Pakistani. But you know? patriotism is a myth. You should be a rational person and see where the better future of Pakistan lies.
Nonetheless, even if you are a patriotic Pakistani, don't you think it won't help if you point towards India?
Well Sarabjeet got someone a better life even after his death. Kudos.
@ET please publish: you mean his abduction was a a stunt. If so please enter into his shoes and feel the ordeal of pinch or the comfort. . Blaming others can be declared as the national pastime.
@shah: Kind of makes you wish you too had a similar opportunity to exploit, doesn't it? :)
Lets hope that 5 years down the line, the same lawyer is not found holding a banner saying "Sharia for Sweden"
If nawaz sharif, imran khan, altaf hussain and zardari can have fireign citizenship then why not him, haanh ???
And assylum leads to immigration
@WaterBottle: Nice one, Add Shireen Mazari to the list and Janab sheikh Rashid to drink all the sattu
Looks like India's MMS was correct to what he said at the UNGA.
@Water Bottle: 20 years down the line, I think Pakistan’s population will be five: Zaid Hamid, Imran Khan, Hameed Gul, Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim.
In 2014, India's population will be Narendra Modi + [insert terrorist name] etc.
To All Above:
The poor lawyer was miserably beaten by local mullah thugs. He's an extremely honest person who has fought for human rights all his life. You people would have recognized that only if he was killed like others.
off to a better place..
Pure opportunist , he must be thanks to Sarabjit soul ... :-)
That is why asylum laws are under fire due to misuse by a minority.
After what happened to Salman Taseer, i think the lawyer's action is justified.
I hope his inlaws in Pakistan wont have to face the brunt.
Now it kind of makes sense why Mr Jinnah never brought his family over to Pakistan.
Hehehe.
20 years down the line, I think Pakistan's population will be five: Zaid Hamid, Imran Khan, Hameed Gul, Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim.
And where do they runaway to.Not to another land of the faithful but to the land of kaffirs whom they denounce all the time
The Laywer has taken advantage of the case and has availed the oportunity to quit Pakistan
Lucky you lawyer. The escape from Pakistan.
Who are the enemy of a peaceful South Asia ?
Can Nawaz Sharif complete his 5-year Prime minister term ?
Stunt.
Sarabjit met his fate, I wonder why his lawyer would run away? What a stupid reason.
Nice way to get Swedish immigration. So many shortcuts for Pakistanis these days.
Pathetic. Judges running away to Middle east after giving judgement, Lawyers running away after fighting for a case. All this means, unless you agree with the monsters, your or your family members' lives are in danger.
Sorry, what Friendship ?
Nothing more than an opportunist and well exploiter of the situation :)
