ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday reminded legislators that they need to submit yearly statements of their assets by September 30.

The electoral body also asked the parliamentarians to submit a no objection statement along with their asset details which would allow the commission to investigate their dual nationality status.

In an official notification, the commission said that in accordance with the law every sitting member of the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies has to submit statements of assets of not only themselves, but also of their spouses and dependents.

Since the ECP has not developed a mechanism to verify these statements, the practice has so far been limited to being a cosmetic exercise in accountability.
