Illiteracy among women and the culture of feudalism are the main contributing factors towards the victimisation, abuse and harassment of the fairer sex, said the vice-chancellor of the Shah Abdul Latif University (Salu), Khairpur, Dr Parveen Shah.

She was speaking at a workshop, titled Discussion on harassment against women at workplace - suggestions and remedies, organised by the varsity’s sociology department, on Thursday.

Dr Shah said that there was a need to maintain a balance between men and women to eradicate gender discrimination. “We have established the Institute of Gender Studies at Salu, Khairpur, for the promotion of the rights of women.”

Former MPA Syed Bachal Shah Jillani emphasised that the cases of harassment were mostly reported from the sectors where men were dominant. A judicial magistrate of Khairpur, Samina Mangi, said that the laws against harassment and violence exist in Pakistan, and the affected women must approach the courts for justice..

Happens in Western countries also. It is male oriented culture, not fuedalism and female illiteracy that are the causes. See one report in US:
