I should not have resigned as COAS: Musharraf

Former President Pervez Musharraf says he should have retained the position of COAS for another five years.

Former President Pervez Musharraf on Saturday said that he should not have resigned from the post of Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) and that he should have retained the position for another five years.

In an interview to NDTV, Musharraf said that India and Pakistan were close to drafting a final pact for a solution for Kashmir.

He added that the final drafts were exchanged through a back channel and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had agreed with Pakistan's four-point formula.

Talking about role of army in Pakistan, the former president said that army should have a say in country's policies.

Musharraf admitted his mistake, and said that he regrets confronting the judiciary, which became the reason for the decrease in his popularity.

Iqbal | 13 years ago | Reply You are right you should have remained in power, which is badly required for Pakistan. You can only bring this nation on the correct path. The country is not yet prepare for the so called "democracy",we have a very very low literacy rate, the votes are casted on the basis of community and under the influence of land lords. There is only one party in which the commoners are the candidates, otherwise in all other parties it is on the basis of "BRADARI" and the poor illiterate peasant is forced to cast vote to the person nominated by the Jageerdar. I want to see the country rise and progress and the "Green Passport" to be respected, the know the humiliation we subjected to as soon as one submit his passport at the airline counter and the way he is treated by the immigration officers in most of the countries including China. I DO NOT CARE WHETHER IT IS SO CALLED DICTATORSHIP AS LONG AS THE PAKISTANIS ARE RESPECTED AND THE COUNTRY FLOURISH.

His alliances with the hand picked corrupt leadership was seen as a burden and was told in clear terms in the Corps Commanders Conference that his time was over. Most of the young officers did not like his affiliations with MQM and mockingly called him "SECTOR COMMANDER Azizabad unit" . Politics is a bigger game than dictatorship. Musharraf is still naïve in the field. A person who failed to deliver in nine years of his absolute powers with no opposition, can never do better

A deserter of Kargil military debalcle tried to push the country to war with India for his personal glory, remained engage in the politics throughout his career as COAS !

And well Army still and always will in Pakistan have a say in politics... as for you yes you lost power when you resigned but that wasnt a choice you had any ways, you could have been popular even after wards had you not taken wrong decisions ir respective you being army chief or not. Learn from them please, it wasnt the resigning that bought you down it was your other decisions that did.. any ways we still find you alot popular and still going strong specially the havoc you have created in the hearts and minds of many politicians in Pakistan, lets see what more can you do....

As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never become true leaders. We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people have reacted when you spoke the truth, and spoke honestly. In the end it has raised the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it has released the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you have won.

I have thoroughly read the the transcript of Musharraf's interview to NDTV and nothing like that is mentioned there, nor any Pakistani tv channel has aired this NEWS so far.
