Officials of the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) suspended power supply to commercial pilferers in their drive against illegal connections on Friday.
During a raid at Sikandar Khan Market on Amir Haider Road, Mardan, 10 shopkeepers were nabbed for using domestic metres for commercial purposes with their loads exceeding 6KW. “The owner of the market was arrested on the spot and a case was registered against him,” said Pesco spokesperson Shaukat Afzal.
A boys hostel on Jamrud Road was also found using direct power connection which were disconnected and its owner arrested. Another direct connection of a general store on the same road was removed.
Pesco officials added a health outlet in Mathra was also found using illegal power connection in the residential quarters of a basic health unit. “Direct power supply was being used for a maternity home in the area and an FIR was lodged against two doctors,” the spokesperson informed.
Officials found a tampered electricity metre at the New Cantonment CNG Station in Aka Khel Risalpur and disconnected power supply and arrested the manager. Police said they are searching for the owner of the station, Iftikhar Khan, for stealing approximately Rs10 million worth of electricity every month.
A team of Pesco officials and levies force also raided several places in the Provincially Administered Tribal Areas and disconnected 19 illegal power connections along with a number of tube wells. “Due to kundas (direct hooks) and illegal use of electricity, power supply to Behram Dheri, Sakha Kot, Sarara and Platool areas in Malakand region have been disconnected and cases have been filed in respective police stations,” Afzal added.
