Initial police reports suggested that a motorcycle which was parked inside the station was laden with explosives.
The motorcycle belonged to a police official called Hayat, who had come to the station for a work-related query, Express News reported.
However, Express News correspondent Ehtisham Khan said that the bomb disposal squad was investigating if the explosives were on the motorcycle, placed in the police station or were thrown from outside.
Hayat was also injured in the explosion.
SP city Ismail told The Express Tribune that the explosion was a low-intensity one and that investigations were underway.
He had said the explosives were attached with the motorcycle's battery.
Soon after the blast, a fire broke out at the police station.
"A fire brigade has been called to the site," said Express News correspondent Yasir Ali, adding that the intensity of the fire was low.
The area has been cordoned off for further investigation. The injured have been shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital.
Around 50 people were present at the site when the explosion occurred.
ANP chief's visit to the site of explosion
Awami National Party (ANP) chief Ghulam Bilour, on his visit to the site of the explosion, said that allowing the motorcycle to be parked inside the station was a security failure.
Commenting on the All Parties Conference which is to take place on September 9, he said that he hadn't refused the invitation.

@fahad: Thank you...since these poor policemen are illiterate and appointed on Sifarish etc, pay lot of money to get appointed, I blame the officers who has to train these poor policemen...u r right ! there are no SOPs in any govt dept, let alone LEAs.....
its sad, but, its also very laughable at the government of how secure everyone is !!!! - police station???? ...and they still ask foreigners to come and invest - invest in Pakistan and get a free death !!!!
@ishrat salim: you are actually right that the motor cycle should hav been checked. But I think we cant blame the police man also. Beacuse there are absolutly no SOP's. Standard operating procedures. The police men are unorganised, remember the sikandar incident. The kpk gov is working hard to setup this INtelligence agency to avoid further attacks. The confiscated vehicles should be placed in a central confiscated cars section.
it is not corruption or terrorism...then what it is ? it is terrorism and height of stupidity...that is what it is...before .bringing in a neglected / abandoned motorcycle from some place, it must be checked thoroughly by the bomb disposal personel...does this thinking require rocket science ? we are such a stupid lot, that is why people under us acts so stupid....
its not a big Explosion and it has only injured people and thank god our police men are safe. i know alot of people that will start criticising kpk gov but they should know there is huge difference between corruption and terrorism. this is the first gov in kpk history that is establishing its own intelligence agency. but it will take time because its terrorism not corruption
