Citizens have been facing the nuisance of encroachments in the Attock city bazaar, but the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) has turned a blind eye to the issue, giving the encroachers freedom to grab what is left of the roads and sidewalks.
Shoppers complained that with encroachments on the rise, it was becoming increasingly difficult for them to move and walk. “Shopping in the main bazaar is a major hassle,” said Aslam, while sifting through second-hand items on a vendor’s pushcart.
Meanwhile, women complained that walking in the main market without a male companion was problematic because most of the sidewalks have been occupied by vendors. “Making one’s way through the hordes of vendors is really irritating,” said a woman.
Encroachments are also creating hurdles in the smooth flow of traffic during peak hours, but the traffic police have thought it better not to disturb the encroachers. “These people grease the palms of police officials to occupying more space on roads,” said a man, while demanding that the district coordination officer and other TMA officials take action against encroachers.
