Actor Atul Kulkarni may not be as popular as mainstream commercial actors but he has nonetheless created a niche for himself through playing intense roles. From playing a cunning politician in Satta to a budding activist in Rang De Basanti, the actor has proved his abilities time and again. While most have his roles have focused on a much serious end of the spectrum, Kulkarni will soon be seen playing a comic role in a Marathi film called Popat.

When asked if comedy was easier to handle, he said, “No genre is easy. For an actor, it’s a serious business even when he’s essaying a funny character. In fact, comedy is more difficult.”

Considering that every actor in Bollywood dreams to hit it big and become a star, isn’t it slightly disappointing for Kulkarni that he is only able to bag a character role? “Who wouldn’t want it? I would have loved to be in that position, but I’m not sad about not being there. There are certain demands to be able to fit those positions, and not every person can fulfil them,” he asserted, reported the Hindustan Times. “I would have loved to be an Aamir Khan or Shahrukh Khan. But if I do a reality check, I realise that I did my first film when I was 35-years-old, so how can I expect to rise to that level?”

Being a small-scale artist, it is pretty hard to find friends in Bollywood or even have the opportunity to work with renowned actors but Kulkarni has been lucky in this respect. He has had the chance to work with actors like Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan.

The actor will next be seen in the remake of Zanjeer and a Hollywood flick, Singularity, which is scheduled to release on October 1, this year.
