Leaders and representatives of over 20 political, religious and secular parties have threatened to observe a complete shutter-down strike and stage sit-ins outside the offices of the SSP, the district commissioner and at National Highway on August 25 if no action was taken against Amanat Ali, popularly known as Don Golo. They alleged that he was involved in an illegal and un-Islamic business by which he doubled his customers’ money within a month.

This warning was issued during a multi-party conference held in Daharki at the residence of the former union council nazim, Mian Manzoor Ahmed, on Sunday evening. The conference was jointly hosted by the Pir of Bharchoondi Sharif Mian Abdul Malik and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Ghotki chapter district president, Mian Rehmatullah.

The participants criticised the tight-lipped attitude of police officials and the district administration over the issue. The speakers said that almost all religious scholars have termed the Don’s business illegal as it was based on interest, which is forbidden in Islam. They lamented that, besides being involved in the illegal business himself, he was luring thousands of others to join him with prospects of quick riches.

The speakers said that Ghotki district was the second largest hub of business after Karachi and Don Golo’s business was a conspiracy against the people of the district. They claimed that, due to the illegal business of Don Golo, a large number of people had withdrawn their money from the banks and other financial institutions to invest with him which had caused considerable damage to commercial banks in the district. They said it was the duty of police and district administration to eliminate the illegal business of Don Golo and threatened of dire consequences if they failed to do so.

The convention was reminded that Amanat (Don Golo) was employed as a watchman for a contractor and now had become a millionaire through means unknown to anyone. They requested NAB to investigate the matter alleging that Don Golo was looting the poor with the support of influential people.

The ‘Don’ protests

Meanwhile, Don Golo and more than 400 of his supporters staged a sit-in outside the SSP office demanding the withdrawal of the FIR registered against him by a Mirpur Mathelo-based journalist. He also demanded the police arrest the journalist for allegedly demanding Rs1 million to shelter his illegal business. Mirpur Mathelo DSP Mushtaq Qureshi assured him of registering an FIR against the journalist after which the blockade ended.
