He was spotted before he could even locate her and was chased out of the house by the servant girls. Word spread and the city’s officials were aghast that Clodius’s presence had polluted their sacred festival. A tribune (the guardian of the people’s rights) took Clodius to court and prosecuted him on the charge of sacrilege.
“Caesar divorced Pompeia at once,” wrote Plutarch, “but when he was called as a witness at the trial, he said that he knew nothing about the charges against Clodius. This seemed a most surprising thing to say and the prosecuting counsel asked: ‘In that case why did you divorce your wife?’
“‘Because,’ said Caesar, ‘I consider that my wife ought not even to be suspected.’”
Many contemporary Roman historians refer to this episode, including Dio Cassius, Suetonius and Appian, showing that it actually happened. Anyway, Clodius was acquitted of the charge, Caesar gained a reputation and we got the saying about how Caesar’s wife should be above suspicion.
This fine Italian tradition of upholding one’s honour at the cost of relatives is something Sonia Gandhi should consider following. The Congress president has always presented herself as being very moral and upright. The reason she declined to become prime minister in 2004, when the Congress surprised the opinion pollsters and came back to power, was that she did not want office. In any case, this is what she claimed: that she had not entered politics for selfish reasons. She had entered for a higher good (I do not remember if she told us what this ‘higher good’ was).
In the same period, there was much talk of her daughter, Priyanka, joining politics but that did not happen. Sonia Gandhi seemed genuinely reluctant to succumb to what almost anybody else would have been unable to resist. This theme was given extension when her son, Rahul, came to the Lok Sabha in 2004 but did not become minister. He won again in 2009 but did not become prime minister, though his chamchas like Jyotiraditya Scindia were begging him to, through pleas in the media.
Even now, when the media wants 2014 to be a battle between Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, it seems possible and even likely that he will not offer himself as candidate for prime minister. Given this background, it is surprising that the Gandhis have refused to come clean on Priyanka’s husband Robert Vadra’s land dealings. Ashok Khemka, the bureaucrat who has examined the deals, has found that there is a problem with the transactions between Vadra and the real estate giant DLF.
On February 12, 2008, Vadra’s Skylight Hospitality bought 3.53 acres of land in Shikohpur, near Delhi, for Rs7.5 crore, then obtained permission to build a commercial colony there. Over the next few months, a report in The Times of India said, Vadra transferred the land and permission for the colony to DLF and made a minimum profit of Rs42.61 crore, according to Khemka. Congressmen have responded to the findings in time-honoured fashion by maligning Khemka. But those who have studied the deal even cursorily will know that it is something that needs to be investigated openly. So far, the Congress has said, quite bizarrely, that it is a private business dealing that the public should not concern itself with. It is no such thing, of course. Vadra is the son-in-law of the most powerful person in India. If nothing else, Sonia Gandhi is morally obliged to set the matter to rest.
Instead, when the story first appeared months ago, the Gandhis sat tight and waited for it to blow away as it inevitably did. It is embarrassing that this was allowed to happen by a family that does not otherwise hesitate in telling us how disinterested it is in the spoils of office. And now the story has returned. It is too late for Vadra to show himself to be above suspicion. But it isn’t late for the Gandhis to show that their moral positions are not mere posturing.

@Water Bottle: Ordinarily if you had bought the land you would not get permission for conversion. only people like Vadra would get it. It is anything but an ordinary business deal. It is the misuse of state power which is a serious source of corruption using the business/politics nexus.
@Gulam Rasool "Kuldeep sharma": Jinnah wanted to do good for Muslims Gandhiji wanted to do good for Indians . The comparison in the security of minorities in India and Pakistan is the result of this difference in thinking .
I have around 42 friend & all dislikes Gandhi. Even some Likes Jinnah because of his Contribution for Muslims (Although the Decision was wrong but atleast he have good intention to do something for Muslims Unlike Gandhi who betrayed Hindus).
To: MODERATOR I am thinking that ET is neutral to "Gandhi or Jinnah", "India or Pakistan", "Hindu or Muslim" so Let me express my views, because my comment shares the same Ideology. Thanks
The author has taken lot of pains to paint sonia as the most righteous person. Her coming to power is the most unfortunate thing that happen to congress and the nation. As you mentioned she is the most powerful person in India enjoying the power without any accountability. She is like Pakistan army, take the glory but pass the short comings. Rahul did not compete with Modi so for because he couldn't match charisma or any other skill. It is a shame congressmen couldn't find a single eligible person to lead the country other than Nehru family.
@abhi
Fair enough. No body is above the law, including Bhadra. Even I want justice. The point is instead of making a ruckus in the parliament and stalling proceedings why the BJP bufoons are not taking him to the court? Is Khemka the judge, jury and the executioner all rolled into one?
@antanu bring him in and soon WE would be having a country like ZIA did to Pakistan
Stop blaming Zia for making your country the way it is. Stop making excuses for the way you are.
@antanu Really! Was Pakistan a secular country before Zia came into power? or may be another question for you. What do you think is wrong is Pakistan today which should not happen in India?
@antanu: Ok. Who do you want to see as India's next PM?
@antanu
Modi might be anti-Muslim in his own personal way, but he does not let the affairs of the state interfere with his own 'beliefs'. Modi has never spoken out anything bad (nor good) about Muslims directly or indirectly. His only "fault" was that he defended the actions of the "agitated Hindus" during the Godhra massacre, which was started by a small group of radical Islamists who burned coaches of a train filled with Hindus returning from Ayodhya (or somewhere, idk from where). Anyway, this "small" thing which led to death of few Hindus sparked communal tensions and led to a violent attack on a Muslim community residing nearby. But even this incident was 12 years ago, and even Supreme Court gave Modi a clean chit in that case, although SC did punish couple Hindu leaders of regional political parties for agitating people. Anyway, thing is, India's constituion does not allow religion to interfere with the governance of the nation. It was also during BJP's time that peace talks were first started between India and Pakistan after a LONG time. Today, Modi has not only made Gujarat the second fastest developing state in India behind Maharashtra, there has been no communal violence in Gujarat for past 12 years and even Muslims are supporting Modi nowadays, albeit slowly, ever since BJP declared itself a secular paty almost 2 years ago. The biggest scams in India happened during Congress' time. Its time to give Modi a chance. Note: Modi "justified" the Hindu agitation after the Godhra incident, but he did not/never preached anything against Muslims. Also he did not interfere in the CBI investigation of this incident in any way.
@Raj - USA: MODI....the monster...? bring him in and soon WE would be having a country like ZIA did to Pakistan
@Travel_Tart The Ghandis have special place on world’s map! They are brand India.
Wrong. Mahatma Gandhi was Brand India at one point in India's history. These are just cheap copies of his name. Usurpers if you please.
"This fine Italian tradition of upholding one’s honour at the cost of relatives is something Sonia Gandhi should consider following." But what happens when not just the relatives but Caesar himself comes under suspicion? Sonia Gandhi herself is under suspicion in the National Herald Trust case, Bofors, providing false personal information in sworn affidavits, Agustawestland helicopter deal, etc. Her name even appears in Railgate transcripts. People in India are no longer fooled by her moral posturings.
@jssidhoo
"... at least spell the name correctly . They are using Gandhiji’s name without even being distantly related to him"
I think the name was Feroze Ghandy, which was later retrofitted so as to inherit a legacy. Feroze was the husband of Priyadarshini Nehru (Indira). So @Travel_Tart may be more right that you thought. Bapu's name is mis-pronounced many a times, and that I find highly irritating. But for these charlatans, the correct name to refer them by is Ghandy.
I have a question for Mr. Patel. This article mentions the ills in the Congress and especially the so-called Congress high command, the crown-prince of the Congress and the greedy brother-in-law. Other articles by the same author speak negatively of Mr. Modi calling him autocratic and communal. So what is an Indian voter to do? Vote for a PM like Deve Gowda from a motley bunch of opportunists. Or should one simply abstain? . Or do you think we should take our chances with Modi, give him 5 years and then see if he is indeed as you claim him to be?
Come on Aakar, some times you must stop lying. Sonia is the most corrupt Italian maid. Corruption is her name of game. What happened some billion dollars stashed away Swiss Account?
Corruption in India started right after 1947 under Nehru's watch. When a member of parliament pointed that out Nehru said the member should not look too much into some corruption here and there. To which the member said a little corruption was like a little pregnancy, it keeps growing. That's what happened and it started with Nehru. Do not hold your breath for the Congress Party to do anything about corruption.
Caesar’s wife and the Gandhis
Ah! But there is a major difference.
Caesar and his consort did not carry the certificate of being 'Secular'.
The Gandhis do.
And in Indian Politics that trumps all else.
And that applies equally to the Lalus, Mulayams, Behen Jis ,Kalmadis, Kodas and all.
India needs to get rid of dynastic politics.Gandhi family has destroyed India. :-(
@Rashid: RTI does not apply to non government transactions.
@Travel_Tart: If u think so highly of them then at least spell the name correctly . They are using Gandhiji's name without even being distantly related to him .
@Rashid: For Congress that has indulged in a vicious media trial of Modi for over a decade, it is interesting when their supporters speak out against a media trial. Having said that, I agree there should not be a media trial.
On February 12, 2008, Vadra’s Skylight Hospitality bought 3.53 acres of land in Shikohpur, near Delhi, for Rs7.5 crore, then obtained permission to build a commercial colony there. Over the next few months, a report in The Times of India said, Vadra transferred the land and permission for the colony to DLF and made a minimum profit of Rs42.61 crore, according to Khemka
If Vadra broke any laws, he should be punished accordingly. If any official did anything illegal to help him, he/she should be punished also. There is no law that says you can't make profit about certain level.
This is the reason that many of were telling you Mr. Patel that Narendra Modi should become the next PM of India.
Wow. Most probably the first article by this author that has no mention of BJP or Modi. Also, probably the only article ever written by him in a 'professional' way, without putting his own biased thoughts into it. For once I'm liking Aakar Patel. I hope all his future articles are written the same way - Firstly, without linking them in any way to BJP unnecessarily, and Secondly, by trying to be honest to his profession.
If you think the Gandhis have a case to answer, then instead of conducting a media trial why don't you take recourse to RTI or a PIL? It costs so little. You will do a great favour to the Indian people. By the way does the same standard of morality (caesars wife principle) can be demanded of A B Vajpayee (officially bachelor) on the parentage of his adopted daughter? Or about the finacial deals involving his son-in-law (adopted off course) Ranjan Bhatchariya?
The Ghandis have special place on world's map! They are brand India. . Same cannot be said about BJP!
Alas!!!!!!! Mr Patel sees some corruption by Congress party............Today no Modi
But it isn’t late for the Gandhis to show that their moral positions are not mere posturing. Agree with every line except this last one. Politics is a family business for the Gandhi parivar, we should not bring morality into it.
A good fact based piece.
