The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government on Monday asked the federal government to hand over the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) to K-P to ensure efficient production.
Addressing a press conference at the CM Secretariat, K-P Chief Minister (CM) Pervez Khattak held the federal government responsible for the province’s electricity woes, claiming the former carries out forced load-shedding and does not give K-P its quota of electricity. Khattak also took the Peshawar Electric Supply Company’s (Pesco) chief to task, asking him to refrain from making ‘misguided’ statements.
Responding to a question regarding differences in his and Pesco chief’s statements regarding the reason for power outages in K-P, the chief minister immediately called in Pesco Chief Tariq Sadozai to the briefing and told him not to make false statements.
The CM had earlier claimed the federal government was not giving K-P its full share of electricity, while the old distribution system is also a hindrance in ensuring smooth power supply. The Pesco chief, on the other hand, had claimed K-P receives its full quota from the national grid, but the old distribution system was responsible for power outages.
Khattak said Sadozai had briefed him thrice on the issue. “He (Sadozai) told me one thing and told the public something else,” said Khattak, adding if the province was receiving its full share, then the outages should only be five or six hours long.
Speaking directly to Sadozai, the CM said: “You told us (the government) we are not getting our full quota of power. Do not issue wrong statements otherwise we will take action against you.”
“We will search for a solution to the power crisis and a coalition delegation from K-P will soon meet the federal minister for water and power in this regard,” added Khattak.
The chief minister stressed the federal government should immediately put an end to unscheduled load-shedding. “We should be given a schedule for the outages,” he demanded, adding his government had no intentions of developing differences with the centre, but would launch protests if it did not get its rightful share. “It is the federal government’s responsibility to fix issues related to power.”
K-P Minister for Finance Sirajul Haq also spoke at the press briefing. “The centre should relieve Wapda of its Rs3 trillion debt and hand it over to K-P for efficient power production,” he said.
“Why is the government after controversial projects?” Haq questioned. “Instead of building Kalabagh and Bhasha dams they should give the money to K-P as we have 20 feasible points from where 25,000 megawatts of hydel power can be generated.”
Other leaders from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s coalition parties in the government, including Qaumi Watan Party senior leader Sikandar Sherpao and Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan parliamentary leader Shahram Tarakzai, were also present on the occasion.
Sherpao in his address termed power outages in the province a grave concern. He said the issue cannot be resolved by simply replacing Wapda officials; the federal government needs seriousness of purpose to resolve it.
Tarakai said outages combined with voltage fluctuations have adversely affected the province’s economy.
All four coalition partners unanimously held the federal government responsible for K-P’s power woes and demanded a solution to the problem. Additionally, the coalition partners announced they would support each other’s candidates in the upcoming by-elections.

@A Pakistani: law and order i agree ... but NATO supplies and Drone Strikes come under the purview of the Federal Government ... not the provincial ... therefore please educate yourself on matters constitutional first ... then comment ...
@A Pakistani: Before making false claims about someones incompetency get some idea about how the System/Govt works. Only Federal Govt can end drone strikes not Provincial Govt. They did not fail to prevent Drone strikes they just cant without Federal Govt help. Also their promise to end Drone strike was if they had the Federal Govt which they didn't get due to massive rigging. About NATO supplies they have stated they will stop them as last resort if they dont get support from Center. Now lets talk about their achievements: 1) KP Govt launched new system of pension payment 2) KP Govt launches Online FIR system 3) KP Govt has already started Police overhaul and revolutionary steps towards peace and good governance. 4) Uniform system of education to be implemented at KP already coming to effect 5) KP govt offers free Iftar at hospitals in Ramadan 6) KPK Government sign MOU with Galaxy Technologies 7) Overseas Pakistan are sending record break funds to KPK and also increase in Foriegn invest. 8) Rght to information act has been implemented 9) Buldiyati Elections starting in 1 month 10) Medical College being built in Swabi and Oil Refinary project is approved
And many more. I just mentioned the ones which are already in progress and you will notice them in coming months
Now go back & read the statements of Imran Khan, that its CM Punjab responsibility to generate electricity when there was PPP govt.in Center, now is it not KP responsibility ??
What a childish statement to hand over WAPADA to KP govt. can our KP CM tell us recovery rate from Peshawar Electricity company, how much?
@A Pakistani & Peace Lover
Terrorism is not a provincial problem anymore and the issue remains untackled because the federal government fails to recognize that a national policy has to be made to deal with it. Every province has security issues and Punjab is no exception. Therefore, it's not that KPK is shying away from its other responsibilities; 70% of KPK industries is shut down - due to security and energy crisis. While the center takes its time to attempt to make a policy and convene APC, KPK is tackling with the other issue of energy which it can in its domain. The point made here is not that they're power hungry but that the federal gov. has failed to give provinces it's fair share of electricity. Hence, if they're incapable of carrying out their duties might as well give it to some who can run it efficiently.
@aaaaa: he said its federal responsibility to 'fix issue' like unjust power distibution. They have their upcoming power generation projects in progress, but they feel unsecure because of federal govt's unjust behaviour.
“It is the federal government’s responsibility to fix issues related to power.”
No its not, power distribution is a federal subject, generation is a provincial subject. Perhaps you need a lecture from IK like he used to do with Shahbaz Sharif.
Kalabagh and Basha are meant for water storage - the power generation is a very welcome by product! The per MW cost of larger HPP are substantially lower than smaller ones. You shouldn't comment on things you have no idea about Khattak sb.
Lastly, WAPDA has nothing to do with managing and supplying electricity. It only manages Hydel generation.
We have seen SHarif family govt in Last six years.. It is fair to give water and power management and development to provinces and let PTI to work on Pak wapda. As we they they are honest people.
Then tomorrow Baluchistan would ask for the Sui Gas Corporation to be handed over to Baluchistan. This is clearly a stupid demand. It is a reaction to the fears and jitters that the KP govt. feels as it already has realized that it is going to fail and therefore it is making unrealistic demands to cover up its imminent failures.
Funny man!
That's a good idea but whos gonna collect the bills from Fata (no go area ) for Pakistanis all the Dams are on Hazara land and then we pays more too .....
i am a PTI member but i think Mr Khattak should first take care of the problems he has authority over like KP's health and education etc after that he should feel free to take over the Centers problems.
If he has totally failed in restoring law & order situation of the province, failed to stop NATO supplies, failed to prevent drone strikes by passing the buck to the central government, he is incapable of handling energy giant like WAPDA. A provincial government's primary responsibility is to maintain law & order but the PTI led coalition government has failed to perform its primary responsibility and now they are merely trying to divert the media attention. Koi Dekhe ya Na Dekhe, Shabbir tu Dekhe Ga!!
