So, the dark glasses and the burqas and the helmets didn’t help, did they? For when we met Hazara political leaders just 12 days ago, they said that whilst they were generally a liberal, educated, outgoing people, even their women and girls had begun to wear burqas to hide their Hazara features.
The men and boys wore dark glasses all the time for the same reason, and those who owned motorcycles wore helmets even while buying/delivering stuff in the marketplaces, even in the intense heat for the same reason.
But none of that helped did it? For the murdering, heartless sectarian terrorists hit them while they were at prayer at an imambargah, where you would only find Shias. What would the Hazara do now? Which cave will they now cower in? Sitting ducks poor things, who gave us our second Commander-in-Chief; courageous fighter pilots; and excellent soldiers with a sense of duty par excellence.
WHEN will the mayhem end? And why not sooner rather than later when the perpetrators are known by their OWN admission of guilt? Punjab is the largest, most powerful province in the country which professes that it will look after the other smaller, more challenged ones, Balochistan leading. Well then, why not straightaway; why not today, when one of the heads of the hydra-headed monster stares us in the eye?
But back to our mission; the first stop of which was a call on the new chief minister of Balochistan, Dr Abdul Malik. I liked him instantly: light and quick of step; straight backed; bright eyes that looked directly at you; a quick wit and an earthiness that only comes with years of very middle-class political activism. May God and nature be kind to him, and may he be able to (or is “allowed to” the word I want?) do the good work he is surely cut out to do.
The recent visit of the prime minister’s to Balochistan and his reiterating that all the agencies of the State must help the new government by following its instructions, is a step in just the right direction. Indeed, I was most heartened to see that possibly the most important person in this whole blessed tamasha, the only English equivalent being “shemozzle”, of Balochistan, the DG ISI was also asked to be there by the PM.
The man who holds all the strings of all the puppets, the IG Frontier Corps (who refused to interact with us, BTW! Indeed, who didn’t even return our telephone calls for a meeting!) had to be there willy-nilly too, which can only spell good for poor old Balochistan.
Our next visit was to the Balochistan Medical Complex (BMC) where the dead, dying and injured girls from the Women’s University (ages 16 to 23, shame on you gentlemen and women terrorists), just down the road, were taken after the blast in their bus. You have to see the site of a suicide bombing to believe it, which is all I will say.
Immediately after, we went to the Women’s University where the tragedy took place and met Vice Chancellor Mrs Sultana Baloch who, strong woman though she is, was still in tears talking about her girls. One was in tears oneself hearing her recount the ordeal they all went through: the complete panic that even the university for young Balochistani girls from all over, even Zhob, was not safe in the monstrous place we have made our country.
It was great to see the HRCP volunteer the services of trauma counsellors from Lahore and Karachi at its own expense if the University thought it would be helpful for those most affected by the mental anguish that such an event surely generates. The thing that stood out most was the spirit with which the young girls wanted the University to reopen and classes to restart. Maybe this generation that has seen the worst of it will, in the end, defeat the monsters?
We then visited the CMH to see the three girls being cared for there and were impressed by the quality of care and of the equipment, second to none in the country, that was being used. All three were in great spirits and wanting to return to their university like their other fellow-students. We also saw a police DSP and a Havildar of the FC, also gravely injured in the attack at the BMC and were told by the smart Lt Col, who was taking us around that, the police officer had barely survived.
The next day at 7.30 in the morning saw us on our way to Ziarat to visit the blown-up Residency in which the Quaid-e-Azam spent some few days when he was mortally ill. It is a hulk of what it was, burnt to ashes, even parts of the two great chinars in the front lawn, charred. Brought back memories when two friends. Lts Sabir Ali and Abdul Haque, and I of the same rank, actually stayed in rooms right adjacent to the Residency itself in August 1967.
It hurt to see part of our national heritage burnt down; but it hurt infinitely more to see the distraught VC of the Women’s University; the injured girls and jawans, and the grieving relatives of the dead. Buildings can be rebuilt; the dead cannot be brought back and the lives of their loved ones cannot be put together again.
P S: Might one suggest to the PkMAP gentleman who said buildings such as the Quetta Residency brought back memories of the Raj (which is why it was destroyed) to burn down the Quetta Governor’s House and destroy the rail line to Quetta too? Listening, Abdus Samad Khan Achakzai?

@ Murad: "All GOOD happens with the will of Allah .All .Evil happens by individual choice and as Muslims it is our duty to stop evil."
This means humans are not capable of doing GOOD by their own will. They do only evil. Funny....isn't it??
The Shia killings and the resultant political upheaval taking place to destabilise Baluchistan looks like a game far too big to be played by local criminal elements. The money and idealogy appears to be flowing from the land of deserts, oil and the mighty US dollar and beyond. The blame for allowing this to happen and cripple our country rests on our shoulders and ours alone.
"We then visited the CMH to see the three girls being cared for there and were impressed by the quality of care and of the equipment, second to none in the country, that was being used"
Mr. Shafi, you are aware that the extra care and special equipment is only wheeled out when there is a pre-announced VIP visit to CMH. Otherwise, its not the CMH I know where many relatives have been given "treatment". Some survived, others did not.
@ Murad Lakhani: who gave "Iblees" free hand to spread evil until Qiyamat rather than apprehending/ punishing him at the first place for disobedience. Do you believe a proven criminal should be let loose to spread evil? I am afraid you being a muslim did not even mention Iblees ( key player) in your statement. Also Allah is doing good only for the kafirs since the invention of a Gun (after sword). Why??
Very well written. We expect that you would write more on Quetta and Balochistan issue. God bless you.
@Utopia: Correction Dear Utopian . "All GOOD happens with the will of Allah .All .Evil happens by individual choice and as Muslims it is our duty to stop evil .
Sir, I always try on Fri/Sat, latest Sundays to catch your few words of wisdom and reality as you see. If only Pakistan had couple of million people of your IQ and thinking, in all walks of life, then the state of the Nation would not be as it is today and perhaps it would have even surpassed its larger neighbour in progress too. Once again, many thanks for bringing reality to us overseas as to the actual state of the nation and its people. You remind of the good days in mid 70's, when I visited Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi, there was no hatred or religious division and the society was more educated and liberal too, but sadly than the dark period arrived and chasing Saudi money, brought Wahabism and the rest is history !
Mr KS, a man of your status will narrate only the emotional sentiments has disappointed me. It is time to do some concrete acts. You yourself agreed the man in uniform (IG FC) even did not bother to return your calls what to talk of meeting. So see the plight of civil society and human rights organisation you represent. You yourself served in Khaki. I did so also. It is the mind set which now requires complete reformation and overhaul and non one is thinking on these lines. On one side mindset of extremists requires reformation while on the other side minds in Khaki have to accept the realities of changed time. Unfortunately no concrete efforts is seen in pipeline for both the problems. Even current government has put the finance matter on top priority and is not coming up with concrete plans to deal with religious extremism as well to reform the mind set of those who are in uniform. So to me persons of your stature now have to come out without mincing the words and ask the government to take both these problems with concrete planning and action. Failing which I fear will be last chance for the Pakistan to survive as nation on the map of the globe.
Why to even discuss this issue when every muslim believes that "All happens with the Will of God"
Great article in support of the hapless Hazara community living a life of perpetual fear and horror. The most distressing is the fact that majority of politicians, journalists, media outlets let alone right-wing political activists are frantically active to apologetically justify all the inhuman atrocities perpetrated by these monsters attributing it to drone strikes despite the fact of proudly claiming responsibility. The more enigmatic is the fact that why are we so adamant to accept the reality and so insensitive to condone such monstrosities. There could be many factors but the most fundamental factor has to do with our penchant for fixing Afghanistan in the ill-conceived self interest of Pakistan. To make this blatant intervention palatable we christened it as strategic depth i.e. fortifying defense of Pakistan In Afghanistan. This policy could only be implemented by using non-state actors. But every proxy having gathered the critical mass has his own agenda to implement and what we are seeing, witnessing and experiencing is nothing but the aspiration of these groups to takeover Pakistan for realizing their dreams.
@Kanwal: @Arifq: @Khan Jr: A great Op Ed and equally good comments of the three names above. I cannot say better than what is already written here. I agree 100% with these comments. Thanks and regards, M
Who knows how much hard work and suffering these girls go through just to get to university.
This incident was probably the most despicable thing any terrorist organization has done. How much hatred do you need to have piled up inside you to first attack the bus that these young girls were on and then go and attack the HOSPITAL where their parents went to retrieve their bodies. I've seen people in Pakistan show more mercy and reverence to spiders due to a particular hadith than LEJ showed to these girls. What is wrong with our country??
I am sure if PM Nawaz Sharif decided to take action aganist LeJ, which Headquarter is in Punjab .LeJ has been killing Shias since General Zia ul Haq decided to make Pakistan Wahebi Sharia state LIKE Saudia Arabia and himself be first Khalifa of Pakistan. As Nawaz Sharif is adopted son to carry out his mission after him is A TEST CASE has became a democrat and has been able to kill his personal desire to be come Ameer ul Momeenen like Zia ul Haq.
What good is the million strong military if it can't protect these innocents? The powers that be know who the perpetrators are. Now's your chance to display your martial prowess and wipe these--animals I was going to say, but animals must not be sullied by association--criminals off the face of this world. Let them meet their maker who's work they think they're doing.
I find it hard to write the same comments here over and over again for the same tragedies. Getting hard to keep track of blasts now. But we are a nation who thinks praising Mumtaz qadri is essentiaal and who think drone attacks are causing all this mayhem. This level of intelligence is maling us doomed. The main strongholds of these thugs are kp and panjab. We must ask ourselves why. Untill we ALL start caring and we ALL take action, this is not going to stop. This is why I feel people like IK are betraying and fooling the nation blatantly. They did nt leave CM house and their monster ministers publicly say "aik dhamaka he to hua hay konsi qayamat aa gae hay" , and get away with it. The panjab govt forms alliance through rana sanaullah with people whoo openly claim to have killed dozens of shias. Salim Shehzad is murdered for exposing rogue generals. MQM invited Sipah e Sahaba terrorists to nine zero. This all shows a whole generation has been brainwashed starting from the times of that c... Zia ul Haq. When our basic mentality as a nation is not changing from these violent beliefs, how can we unite. Hope this current generation will realise how a cheater is always a cheater and how wrongs never make right.
God bless you Kamran Shafi Sahib and all other civil society people helping these poor souls. Shame on our intelligence agencies and their handlers for being complete failures in protecting our people. Shame on officials for their complete failure in arresting these barbarians. Shame on the people of our country who fail to feel the pain of those suffering across the country.
If MrJinnah had been alive, as a Shia he would have been risking his life if he spend a few days in Ziarat (or any other part of Balochistan) due to the activities of our patriotic surrogates.
