Taxing the rich to help the poor: President Zardari

President Zardari says government has decided to tax the rich to mitigate the sufferings of the poor.

BADIN: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said the government has decided to tax the rich to mitigate the sufferings of the poor.

Addressing a public gathering in Badin, he said that "democracy knows how to defend itself and it is here to stay."

The president said Pakistan is going through a difficult phase but the government is trying to make it a better place. He said he believes in democracy and he has strengthened the parliament by transferring his powers.

President Zardari said the real power lies with the people and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government came to power with a clear public mandate.

He added that if the PPP supported landlords it would have lost its vote bank a long time ago.

SHA | 14 years ago | Reply i have seen every pakistani contribute and help in this calamity to the extent possible based on his/her wealth and capacity... I have even a labourer who hardly saves Rs 2000 from his monthly wage, give the entire amount to a welfare org. that he trusts... what the govt. and the foreigners are cribbing about is that the pakistanis dont trust their govt. and the money has not gone thru the govt. hands.... people have decided to either go to the affected areas by themselves and help out and contribute or contribute to NGOs they trust or even to the Pak army as they very well know what will happen to their hard earned money if it went to the Prime Ministers Fund... so now the govt. wants to usurp money thru taxes....

Ahmer Ali | 14 years ago | Reply Assalam-o-Allaikum Warahmatullah.Much the best statement given by President Zardari and this statement shows Zardari's human sympathy about poor people of Pakistan but the burning question is either rich bags of National Assembly and Parliament and especially Zardari himself and elite and privileged class shall pay all the due taxes sincerely and honestly according to their actual income or this statement is just to win and regain the good will of nation and to create soft corner in nation's heart.If this statement is just given to beg more and more aid from the advanced nations then Zardair will succeed in this campaign of collecting more and more taxes from the elite and privileged rich bags of Pakistan and is Zardari sincere and honest in his this intention?

Liaquat Ali | 14 years ago | Reply Most of these taxes would be levied against the Karachiites as usual. Nothing new in the 63 years of discrimination against the Karachiites. The capital was moved from Karachi so that these racists could remote control Karachi without much repercussions.

Aamir | 14 years ago | Reply Is this tax going to apply on our president as well.. By definition of our president we must know who is considered to be "RICH". Recently the tax returns submitted by the members of the parliment shows that i believe they are not RICH.....
