A woman and her two sons, who had reportedly taken refuge in a house in Thatta, and another child were killed reportedly over a land dispute on Saturday.
Four victims - 45-year-old Khadija Brohi and her sons, 12-year-old Ghulam Muhammad Brohi and 10-year-old Ghulam Sarwar Brohi, and eight-year-old Azhar Kori - were allegedly killed by the brothers of Khadija’s husband, Haq Nawaz Brohi, who is serving a jail term in Karachi’s central prison.
According to the Jhirk police, around 2:30 am on Saturday, over half a dozen armed assailants broke into the house of Ali Hassan Kori, a peasant of Brohis, where the family members had been hiding for a week. “They opened fire, killing four and injuring four others,” SHO Jhirk Aslam Khanzada told The Express Tribune. “They left after the attack without facing any resistance.”
The injured include Ali Hassan Kori and his wife Azra Kori and their two daughters.
Khadija was staying at the Kori’s house along with her six children, four of whom have survived the attack. She was reportedly evicted from her residence in Qasimabad town, Hyderabad, a week ago by her husband’s brothers.
“The family was continuously getting death threats. They kept a low profile and in Thatta, they introduced themselves as Magsi by caste instead of Brohi,” Younus Kori, brother of Ali Hassan Kori, told The Express Tribune. According to him, three years ago, Haq Nawaz Brohi was arrested from his land in Jhirk and put in prison in a case allegedly orchestrated by his brothers. “Since then, they kept tormenting his wife and children, occupied their bungalows in Karachi and Hyderabad.”
The family, Kori added, hails from Jacobabad district. They had left their hometown due to the family dispute and began living in Hyderabad and also bought around 10 acres in Jhirk.
SHO Khanzada said that an FIR of the incident has been registered in the Jhirk police station. Six brothers of Haq Nawaz Brohi, including Ghulam Hussain Brohi, and nine others have been nominated. He said that a special raiding team led has left for Jacobabad to arrest the suspects.
Meanwhile, the burial of the deceased family will take place when Khadija’s family arrives from Jacobabad and Shikarpur districts.
