Academic diplomacy: KU to establish a Mandarin institute

Students who complete the language course will be eligible to study in China for free.

KARACHI: Karachi University (KU) vice-chancellor, Prof. Dr Muhammad Qaiser, and president of the Sichuan University, China, Zhou Jimeng, attended the signing ceremony of the Confucius Institute of Chinese Language held at KU on Tuesday.

The caretaker provincial minister for religious affairs, Sardar Yaseen Malik, said that the institute will open academic opportunities between the two countries. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the two universities when Dr Qaiser visited China last year.

According to the MoU, KU will set up the institute and teach the language to students from the primary to higher secondary level.

The Siachuan University will award postgraduate degree in Mandarin language to the students who complete a two-year programme at its campus.

The students, who complete the language course at the KU, will be eligible to attend a one-year advanced course at the Sichuan University for free.

The Chinese government has also offered to provide scholarships to eligible students.

The teachers at the institute will be native Chinese speakers while Dr Sajjad from the Bio chemistry department will be the coordinator. Dr Qaiser said that the students look forward to learning the language because of its significance around the world.
