Asad eyeing long innings in England

Batsman says responsibility increases after Younus’ absence.

ABBOTABAD:

After a poor show by the team’s batsmen during the tour of South Africa that eventually led to former captain Younus Khan’s exclusion, Asad Shafiq is aiming to contribute heavily as Pakistan gear up for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

Younus was dropped over poor form and was one of the casualties after the tour in which Pakistan were whitewashed in the Test series 3-0 and went down in the One-Day Internationals 3-2.

Asad emerged as the few positives in the series and the promising middle-order batsman termed the ICC Champions Trophy another tough challenge.

“Definitely, Younus’ absence has added responsibility,” said Asad after the second day of the training camp underway at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

“All the players’ target is to give a combined effort and win the trophy. My individual target is to help Pakistan through my performance. My aim is to play lengthy and substantial innings in England.”

“We will try to set a good total and that’ll prove to be of great help to our bowlers.”

Asad, who has played 19 Tests and 36 ODIs, said the ongoing camp will help in maintaining the team’s rhythm.

“Our practice sessions are really helping us and the tracks here in Abbottabad hold immense value in our preparations. The presence of Javed Miandad, who is a legend, is crucial and his tips will definitely help us.”

Asad added the experience of playing in South Africa will help the team in England.

“The conditions are very similar to that in England. We spent a long time in South Africa and that will help us.”

Responding to a query, the 28-year-old said he has no desire to play at any specific position in the batting order, adding that he was ready to play as per the team’s requirement.

“I am ready to play at any position the team management wants me to. My aim has always been to give my contribution and positions have never been my priority.”
