Debate contest: Clash of ideas: Rising to the heights of oration

Students from leading national institutions showcase communication, creative skills.

Shaheen Akhter was visibly overjoyed at bagging third position at a countrywide debate contest. The student of Karakoram International University (KKIU), Gilgit, competed with students of leading national institutions.


“I feel honoured to have earned this award,” she said, while talking to The Express Tribune after winning the Allama Iqbal Shield at the All Pakistan Inter University Debate Contest at Higher Education Commission Secretariat (HEC) on Wednesday.

About 30 students from public and private sector institutions participated in the contest. In English debates, Waseem Gohar, Institute of Management Sciences Peshawar, Ahmed Nadir of University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Taxila and Akhter from KKIU got first, second and third positions respectively.

In Urdu debates, Ahmad Talha Wali of UET, Lahore, Umer Khan Ufaq of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi and Hamza Hameed Tarar University of the Punjab, Lahore got first, second and third positions respectively.

Tarrar debated on “Shall the definition of private and government be abolished for education at higher education”. He said the obstacle to the development of the education sector was disparity of systems prevailing in the country. “The top elite including politicians and bureaucracy will never anybody let move against such systems. Only youth can come forward and choose honest leaders,” he said.

HEC Chairman Javaid Leghari said, “The contest aims to promote communication skills and critical thinking of the students, enhance their understanding of socio-economic and political issues as well as divert their energies towards healthy activities and creative thinking.”

Moreover, HEC Executive Director Mukhtar Ahmed said the position holders would represent the country at South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Debate Contest next year.
