BARA/ JAMRUD:

At least six people were injured on Tuesday in separate attacks carried out by unidentified militants in Jamrud and Bara tehsils of Khyber Agency.

Militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) stormed a security check post in Shan Khel area of Muhammad Ali Chowk, Akka Khel, injuring five security personnel.

A security official said they managed to kill six of the militants in the ensuing retaliatory fire. He added a search operation was launched soon after the incident, during which the bomb disposal squad (BDS) defused five high intensity bombs planted by militants in the area to target security convoys and militia members.

Earlier in the day, a driver was injured in Jamrud when militants targeted vehicles supplying goods to Nato troops stationed in Afghanistan.

Political administration official Asmatullah Wazir said the convoy of containers en route to Afghanistan came under attack near Ali Masjid at around 10am. He added two men travelling on a motorcycle intercepted the convoy and opened fire at the vehicles.

The gunmen managed to escape after the assault, leaving a driver identified as Muhammad Faheem injured.

Wazir said khasadar personnel arrived at the site soon after the incident and shifted the injured driver to the Jamrud Civil Hospital, where doctors said he was in stable condition. A search operation was launched in the area in which 20 shops were sealed and four suspects were arrested, Wazir added.

On Sunday, the driver of a vehicle was killed by militants in Jamrud while returning from Afghanistan after unloading supplies for foreign troops.

Last Friday, LI militants attacked the Akka Khel militia and captured most of the areas, forcing residents and volunteers to flee from their houses.
