TCP to auction 50,000 tons of sugar

Economic Coordination Committee directs TCP to offload the imported sugar in the open market through an auction.

KARACHI: The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) will auction 50,000 tons of sugar in the next few days.

According to a press release issued by the TCP, the Economic Coordination Committee has directed the TCP to offload 50,000 tons of imported sugar in the open market through an auction. It also said that tenders will soon be floated in this regard.

TCP public relations officer, Khizar Hayat, has said that 44,800 tons of the sweetener will arrive in Pakistan by Friday. “MV Orbit carrying 30,000 tons of sugar arrived at the outer anchorage of Port Qasim on September 22,” cited the official release.

It added that the ship will take berth on Thursday and will immediately start offloading sugar at the port.

“One more ship, MV Unicorn Brave, carrying 7,800 tons was scheduled to arrive on Wednesday and another vessel MV Unicorn 1, carrying 7,000 tons, will reach Karachi on September 24,” said the notification.

TCP is also expecting containerised shipments of 44,054 tons by the end of the month. Hayat said so far 478,155 tons of sugar have been received by the TCP. He added that after providing stocks to the Utility Stores Corporation and provincial governments, the institution was left with stocks of about 196,000 tons.
