The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) freed PPP’s candidate Tikka Iqbal and Shiekh Afzal’s son Haris Afzal after some hours of their formal arrest on Thursday, reportedly due to pressure of some powerful circles, sources familiar with the matter told The Express Tribune.
NAB had arrested Haris Afzal on Wednesday morning on charges of selling the family’s frozen property in Dubai and withdrawing a 52.5 million Dirham amount from his and Khawra’s accounts from Emirates Bank’s Dubai branch, sources said.
The property, situated in Dubai’s affluent Emirates Hill neighbourhood, had been frozen along with other assets belonging to the accused after they failed to return a loan obtained from BoP.
Offices of NAB Punjab and NAB Headquarters in Islamabad remained open till 4:00 am Thursday to ensure the release of Haris Afzal, sources revealed.
Initially, the officials of Financial Crime Investigation Wing (FCIW) of NAB Punjab had refused to release the accused taking a stance that they have made a formal arrest of the accused on record, but after receiving a written message at 2:40 am, Haris Afzal was released at about 4:00 am, sources further revealed.
After this development, the BoP management has sent a letter to the Chairman NAB, which is available with The Express Tribune, recording protest on the illegal release of Haris Afzal.
Tikka set free
NAB has also freed the former Provincial Minister and current candidate for Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for NA-166 and PP-230 Tikka Muhammad Iqbal in connection with the notorious Qasre Zauq scandal, barely a few hours after his arrest, reportedly on pressure of some powerful circles, sources said.
Iqbal was accused of facilitating the sale of the Qasre Zauq Plaza which had been frozen by the bureau in connection with the Rs1.38 billion fraud case. Iqbal had acted as a guarantor in the sale of the property, in return for monetary benefits from the family of former senator Gulzar Khan.
Ramzan Sajid, the NAB Spokesman while talking to The Express Tribune said that the allegations regarding pressure from any quarters are baseless. He confirmed the fact that both the accused have been released by the NAB.

Democracy is the best revenge
It is believed that not only Babar Awan and other prominent so called lawyers made money out of Punjab Bank Scam but also Chairman Nab who approved this plea bargain with this biggest fraudster of the country has taken 50 Million Rupees to approve this deal. There is also a news that the second undeclared wife of Sheikh Afzal has been arrested in Dubai while comitting fraud with the member of the ruling family of Dubai which the crime was also sponsored by the NAB. This is highly shameful to this department under the leadership of current chairman National Accountibility Act.
ehtasab bureau or nab, have always been used for arm twisting and straightening the opponents.the postings are made in nab after ensuring pliability of candidates. the bureau is infested with inept and corrupt to the core people.any institution meant for accountability can work successfully provided it is fully autonomous and is manned by peoplewith integrity. i,m sure we still have honest and able people amongst us.
What a country!
NAB is useless. working under political pressures, this organization should be banned.
