Disaster assistance: Norway to continue supporting Red Crescent

The ambassador appreciated the cooperation between the Norwegian Red Cross and Pakistan Red Crescent Society.

Norwegian Ambassador Cecilie Landsverk on Wednesday assured the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) of continued support in its humanitarian endeavours. Landsverk stated this during her meeting with PRCS Chairman Maj General (retd) Muhammad Nawaz Khan at PRCS National Headquarters, according to a press release issued by the PRCS.


The ambassador appreciated the exemplary cooperation between the Norwegian Red Cross and PRCS and hoped that the cooperation will be further strengthened to provide maximum relief to people in need.

Gen Nawaz thanked the ambassador and the Norwegian government for their assistance,adding that from 2010 to 2013, the Norwegian Red Cross provided support to PRCS worth over Rs 443 million for emergency relief, health care and branch development at district level.

He said that the PRCS and Norwegian Red Cross are working on different projects in Sindh and FATA.

He said the biggest challenge for a humanitarian organisation is financial sustainability and the PRCS is striving to achieve this by 2015.

General Nawaz said that the PRCS is focusing on community-based programmes to empower communities to take effective risk management and response actions.

The ambassador also attended a briefing by PRCS Director Operations Ghulam Mohammad Awan on PRCS major relief operations. The ambassador was told that during nine major disasters between 2005 and 2012, the PRCS, its partners and local donors has reached 10.8 million beneficiaries with assistance worth Rs20 billion.
